Senior Native Title & Heritage Coordinator

Buurabalayji Thalanyji Aboriginal Corporation (BTAC) is the Registered Native Title Body Corporate (RNTBC) for the Thalanyji People through Native Title Determination WCD2008/003 and also agent for the Thalanyji/Nhuwala Native Title claimants (WC2024/007).

BTAC is seeking a Senior Coordinator to assist BTAC through a period of growth and refocus of the BTAC native title and heritage programs.  This includes progressing the Thalanyji/Nhuwala Native Title (WC2024/007) claim and supporting expanding cultural programs.

The Senior Coordinator reports to the Native Title and Heritage Manager and will be responsible for leading the native title and heritage team in native title claim research and safely delivering heritage work scopes including coordinating surveys for resource partners and other stakeholders.

The Senior Coordinator is the point of contact for members, consultants and external partners.  Consequently, there is a daily emphasis on project planning and coordination in this role.

This role will be based in South Perth with frequent travel in and around Onslow.

Key deliverables:

 Provide advice to the business on native title, land access and heritage matters up to Board level;

• Supervise a small, highly skilled team, including providing ongoing support and leadership to the team to enhance skills and career development;
• Liaise and interface with internal and external stakeholders in respect of land access and contractual arrangements and heritage work;
• Assist with the maintenance of relevant databases including spatial information and;
• Provide ad hoc land access and strategic advice.

Key prerequisites:

 Tertiary qualification in a related discipline such as environment, geology, archaeology or equivalent demonstrated and recognised experience;

• Understanding of Aboriginal Heritage and Native Title legislation including the claim determination process;
• Excellent working knowledge of the WA Mining Act, Land Administration Act and related resources development legislation as it applies to the development and operation of mining and exploration projects in WA;
• Experience in drafting and reviewing agreements, including Land Access and Heritage Protection Agreements and protocols;
• Experience using Mineral Titles Online and Landgate;
• Experience using GIS and mapping systems;
• Experience working with Aboriginal People in the Native Title Sector, and/or for an RNTBC, PBC or an AC;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
• Demonstrated experience in engaging and negotiating with external and internal stakeholders plus consultants;
• Advanced Microsoft products skills.
• A valid C-Class Manual Australian Driver’s Licence is required.
• A recent, valid, and clear National Police Clearance.
• Willingness to work in a regional location and undertake extended fieldwork in remote areas for extended periods during the field season (roughly March to November).
