About the role
Sutherland Shire | Permanent Full-Time or Part-Time | Casual Opportunities
Complex patients. Meaningful nursing. A team you’ll genuinely enjoy being part of.
Join one of Australia’s leading specialist referral hospitals and become an important part of our highly skilled surgical nursing team.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Veterinary Nurse who is passionate about delivering exceptional care to surgical patients before and after complex specialist procedures.
You’ll work alongside specialist surgeons, anaesthetists, residents and experienced nurses, caring for a diverse and challenging caseload that includes orthopaedic, soft-tissue, neurological, neurosurgical and cardiothoracic patients.
No two days are the same. You’ll have exposure to some of the most advanced procedures performed in veterinary medicine while developing your clinical skills in a supportive, collaborative environment.
You’ll be challenged and encouraged to grow, but you’ll also work with a friendly, down-to-earth team that enjoys a laugh, celebrates each other’s wins and genuinely looks out for one another.
No mandatory on-call
No public holiday shifts
An exciting and varied specialist surgical caseload
Competitive remuneration, commensurate with your skills and experience
Direct mentorship from specialist surgeons and experienced nursing leaders
Structured professional development and ongoing education
An in-house Clinical Educator dedicated to supporting your growth
Opportunities to develop advanced surgical and inpatient nursing skills
Access to world-class facilities, including MRI, CT, fluoroscopy and advanced surgical suites
Exposure to complex orthopaedic, soft-tissue, neurological, neurosurgical and cardiothoracic cases
Staff discounts on veterinary services
A convenient Sutherland Shire location close to public transport
Just as importantly, you’ll be joining a team that values kindness, communication and collaboration as much as clinical excellence.
Expect supportive colleagues, shared lunches, plenty of laughs, team celebrations and people who will step in to help when the day becomes particularly busy.
In this role, you will:
Provide exceptional nursing care to surgical patients before and after procedures
Complete patient admissions, clinical assessments and preparation for surgery
Closely monitor post-operative patients to support safe and comfortable recoveries
Administer medications, fluid therapy and prescribed treatments
Recognise and respond promptly to changes in a patient’s condition
Undertake comprehensive pain assessments and support effective pain-management plans
Assist with wound management, bandage care and other post-operative nursing interventions
Maintain accurate medical records and treatment documentation
Communicate patient updates clearly and effectively with the wider clinical team
Collaborate with surgeons, anaesthesia nurses, ECC clinicians and inpatient teams to ensure continuity of care
Maintain high standards of infection control, clinical hygiene and patient safety
Advocate for your patients throughout every stage of their hospital stay
We’re looking for someone who:
Holds a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing or an equivalent qualification
Has previous experience in a surgical, hospital, emergency or busy general practice environment
Has strong patient-assessment and monitoring skills
Is organised and able to manage competing clinical priorities
Remains calm, adaptable and confident in a fast-paced hospital environment
Communicates clearly and enjoys working as part of a multidisciplinary team
Takes pride in delivering compassionate, high-quality patient care
Is eager to learn, open to feedback and excited to develop within specialist practice
Brings a positive attitude and contributes to a healthy team culture
You don’t need to arrive knowing everything. If you have strong nursing foundations, excellent patient-care instincts and the motivation to develop, our team will support you to build your specialist nursing skills.
It would be an advantage if you have:
Experience within a specialist referral or emergency hospital
Experience caring for high-dependency or critically unwell surgical patients
Advanced wound, drain or bandage-management skills
An interest in developing advanced surgical and inpatient nursing capabilities
