About the role
**About The Cottage Homes Inc.**
Established in 1872, The Cottage Homes Incorporated is a South Australian charity providing safe, secure and affordable housing for older people receiving the Age Pension. We currently support more than 130 residents across nine metropolitan Adelaide communities, helping people maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life.
The Cottage Homes Incorporated is seeking compassionate volunteers to join our long-standing Visitor Program. Since 1947, our Visitors have played an important role in supporting older South Australians living independently in affordable housing by providing regular social connection, a listening ear and a caring presence.
As a Volunteer Visitor, you'll be paired with another volunteer and visit residents at one of our housing communities (Davoren Park) once each month. You'll get to know the residents, build genuine relationships and help ensure they continue to feel valued, safe and connected within their community.
**Duties**
* Visit residents once a month during the day
* Provide companionship and a friendly, welcoming presence
* Listen to residents' concerns and celebrate life's everyday moments
* Help identify any wellbeing or community issues that may require support
* Attend a monthly Visitors Liaison Committee meeting to share updates and receive support from fellow volunteers
* Occasionally assist with resident interviews or annual property inspections if you're available.
**Personal Attributes**
* Compassionate, friendly and respectful.
* Empathetic and patient.
* Reliable and committed.
* Enjoys meeting and talking with older people.
* Able to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
**Skills**
* Good communication and active listening skills.
* Ability to build positive relationships.
* Comfortable working as part of a volunteer team.
* Able to identify when concerns should be referred to the Visitors Liaison Committee or Cottage Homes staff.
**What's provided?**
* Comprehensive induction and ongoing support
* A welcoming and experienced volunteer team
* Regular support through monthly meetings
* The opportunity to make a genuine, lasting difference in your local community.
**Additional Requirements / Information**
* Volunteers commit to approximately 4–6 hours per month, including one daytime resident visit and attendance at a monthly Visitors Liaison Committee meeting.
* Visitors are appointed to the same Cottage Homes community to encourage ongoing relationships with residents.
* Volunteers receive induction, ongoing support and peer networking through the Visitors Liaison Committee.
* A National Police Check (working with vulnerable people) is required and paid for by Cottage Homes.
* Volunteers are required to become members of The Cottage Homes Incorporated and comply with organisational policies.
This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful difference to the lives of older South Australians by helping reduce social isolation and supporting people to remain living independently in a safe, connected community.
