About the role
Hydrowood is an innovative, world-leading project recovering rare and valuable submerged timber from Lake Pieman on Tasmania’s spectacular West Coast. Using specialised marine vessels and harvesting equipment, we recover timber that has been preserved beneath the water for decades, creating a truly sustainable and premium timber resource.
We’re looking for a motivated and experienced Tug Master / Trainee Harvest Operator to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working on the water, operating specialised equipment and being part of a close-knit team in a unique and rewarding environment.
If you’re practical, safety-focused and thrive in remote operations, we’d love to hear from you.
Reporting to the Hydrowood Operations Manager, you’ll play a key role in the safe and efficient operation of our marine fleet and harvesting activities.
Your responsibilities will include:
· Operating Hydrowood vessels in accordance with survey requirements and maritime legislation.
· Skippering tug and support vessels and towing/pushing log barges.
· Supporting harvesting operations and vessel movements.
· Assisting with loading, unloading and handling harvested timber.
· Carrying out routine inspections, preventative maintenance and minor repairs.
· Diagnosing mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults in remote environments.
· Operating GPS, sonar and other marine navigation systems.
· Maintaining accurate operational records and vessel logbooks.
· Working safely in accordance with Hydrowood’s Safety Management System (SMS), Environmental Management System (EMS) and AMSA requirements.
There will also be opportunities to develop your skills and receive training in Hydrowood’s specialised timber harvesting operations.
You are someone who:
· Has experience operating commercial vessels.
· Has experience towing or pushing barges.
· Enjoys hands-on mechanical work and fault finding.
· Works well independently and as part of a small team.
· Has a strong commitment to safety and environmental responsibility.
· Is adaptable, reliable and willing to work in a remote operating environment.
· Is keen to learn new skills and develop into a specialised harvesting role.
Forestry experience is desirable but not essential—we’re committed to providing training for the right candidate.
Applicants should hold one or more of the following:
· NSCV Master <24 m (Master Class 5)
· Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 (MED 3)
· Current Driver Licence
· Workplace Level 2 First Aid
Highly regarded, but not essential:
· Excavator (LE) Licence
· Heavy machinery experience
· Feller Buncher competency
· Chainsaw competency
· ROV or underwater machine operation experience
· Marine maintenance experience
· Experience with sonar and GPS navigation systems
· Forestry or harvesting operations
This role is based at Lake Pieman on Tasmania’s West Coast and typically operates on a four-day roster (Monday to Thursday), with additional days, weekend work and extended hours as operational requirements dictate.
Preference may be given to applicants residing on Tasmania’s West Coast or North-West Coast.
At Hydrowood, you’ll become part of a passionate team delivering one of Australia’s most innovative marine harvesting operations.
We offer:
· A unique and rewarding workplace unlike any other.
· Permanent or casual employment opportunities.
· Ongoing training and professional development.
· Opportunities to expand your marine and harvesting skills.
· A strong commitment to safety, teamwork and environmental stewardship.
· A supportive workplace where your contribution is valued.
Hydrowood is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applications from suitably qualified candidates who share our commitment to safety, sustainability and operational excellence.
If you’re an experienced marine operator looking for your next challenge and want to be part of an innovative Tasmanian success story, we’d love to hear from you.
