About the role
LGPM Process Innovation designs and delivers industrial control and automation systems, and we're growing our in-house electrical and automation capability. We're looking for a Control Systems Engineer to take technical ownership of projects from concept design through to commissioning and handover, with the autonomy to run your own scopes and limited day-to-day supervision. This is a hands-on role that blends design and delivery — control and electrical design one day, panel build, installation management and commissioning the next.
Key responsibilities
Design control and automation systems — control philosophies, functional specs, I/O schedules, network architecture and sequence-of-operation documentation
Design control panels to AS/NZS 61439 and AS/NZS 3000 — schematics, layouts, BOMs and electrical calculations
Select control, instrumentation and electrical components with process, environment, lifecycle and cost in mind
Build, wire and test control panels, and supervise panel build work by technicians, apprentices and subcontractors
Develop and commission PLC, HMI and SCADA applications, including FAT/SAT, fault-finding and handover support
Produce installation documentation — cable schedules, loop drawings, test records, compliance docs and as-builts
Manage site installation works — planning, resourcing, supervising crews and subbies, quality verification and close-out
Provide technical input to estimates, quotes and tenders, and act as the technical point of contact for your projects and clients
Mentor apprentices, technicians and junior staff, and help shape consistent electrical and control standards across projects
About you
A Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical, Electronic or Mechatronics); or a Diploma/Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering or Industrial Automation with substantial relevant experience; or an A-grade electrical trade qualification with demonstrated control systems design experience
3–5 years' experience in industrial control systems, automation or systems integration
Demonstrated control panel design and PLC, HMI and SCADA commissioning experience
Working knowledge of AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 61439, AS/NZS 3008 and AS 60204.1
Experience supervising installation works on operating industrial sites
Strong documentation, communication and client-facing skills, and the ability to manage concurrent projects autonomously
Victorian Electrical Worker's Licence (A-grade) or the ability to obtain, current driver's licence, White Card, and a satisfactory National Police Check if requested
Desirable: Hazardous areas competency (UEE42620 or individual Ex units), or willingness to obtain Registration under the Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019 (Vic), RPEQ, Chartered status or NER listing — or eligibility to pursue Registered Electrical Contractor licence and functional safety experience (AS 4024, ISO 13849, IEC 61508 / IEC 61511)
Desirable: Experience in bulk materials handling or process industries, and proficiency in electrical CAD (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN or similar)
