Metal Buyer / Yard Personnel – Scrap Metal Recycling

We are looking for a practical, hands-on Metal Buyer to work in our scrap metal yard. This is a customer-facing yard role focused on receiving, unloading, grading, and buying scrap metal from customers and suppliers as they arrive on site. You will spend most of your time in the yard dealing with people face-to-face, operating equipment, and doing physical work.

 Key Responsibilities

 • Greet and assist customers bringing scrap metal into the yard.

• Direct and help unload vehicles safely and efficiently.

• Grade, sort, and assess ferrous and non-ferrous scrap on the spot.

• Weigh material, and process purchases accurately.

• Provide clear, friendly service and handle basic queries.

• Multitask between serving customers, operating the scales, sorting material, and supporting other yard activities during busy periods.

• Assist with loading, stacking, moving, and preparing scrap for processing or transport.

• Maintain a clean, organised, and safe work area.

• Follow all site health, safety, and environmental procedures.

• Complete basic paperwork and transaction records.

Required Skills & Attributes

• Strong people skills and a confident, approachable manner with customers.

• Ability to multitask and stay organised in a busy, fast-moving yard environment.

• Physically fit with genuine labouring skills and willingness to work outdoors in all weather.

• Practical, hands-on attitude and good common sense.

• Basic numeracy for weighing.

• Reliable and safety-focused.

Preferred / Favourable

• Current forklift licence (highly regarded).

• Previous experience in a scrap yard, recycling facility, warehouse, or similar industrial environment.

• Knowledge of common scrap metal grades (highly regarded).

Working Conditions

This is a full yard-based role involving regular physical work (lifting, sorting, unloading, and moving material), outdoor work in varying weather, and continuous customer and team interaction.
