We currently operate two bricks and mortar stores in Victoria, a growing online store, and deliver three social impact programs annually.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a Young Leader Board Advisor to join our existing Board and provide a youth perspective at the governance level, drawing on lived experience of homelessness or hardship.

The Board ensures HoMie successfully carries out its purpose by setting strategy, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing risks and supporting the CEO to run an efficient and effective organisation. HoMie’s governance structure includes the Board and three sub-committees, which provide internal expert advice on key areas of HoMie’s strategic plan and ongoing operations.

The Young Leader Board Advisor is a paid position requiring approximately 3-4 hours per month after an initial onboarding period of around 4 hours per week, for 6 weeks. Previous board or governance experience is not required, so we encourage you to apply if you are interested in learning as you go.

ABOUT YOU

As a Board Advisor, you will contribute to the HoMie Board by sharing your ideas, perspective and opinions on key Board matters. You will be supported by the Board Chair and the Impact Subcommittee, which includes Board members and senior HoMie staff.

A Board Advisor is not a Board Director and does not carry the legal or fiduciary responsibilities of Board Directors.

The role will involve:

• Attending governance coaching/training sessions
• Reading all relevant papers in advance
• Meeting monthly with the Chair of the Board or a delegate
• Attending a minimum of 6 Board meetings each year, in person or virtually

You will have access to training and other support to develop your leadership skills and governance knowledge. You will be expected to attend meetings prepared and ready to contribute. You will also need to maintain the confidentiality of Board discussions, papers and decisions.

All authorised work associated with the role is paid, including Board meetings, training and coaching, meetings, preparation and reading Board papers. Attendance at a Board meeting will be paid for a minimum of three hours. Agreed role-related expenses will also be reimbursed.

All Board Directors will also attend training to support meaningful youth participation.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS

• Personal experience with, and an understanding of, the systemic and structural challenges that affect young people facing homelessness or hardship
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to share ideas and different perspectives, and work in a team with people from different walks of life
• Contribute your perspective and ideas, informed by lived experience
• Organised and accountable, with the ability to manage your time, attend Board meetings, complete pre-reading and prepare for meetings
• A genuine interest in the role of the Board, including risk, governance and strategy development
• A strong commitment to HoMie’s purpose, objectives and vision.
