About the Branch

As part of the implementation of the Department’s new Strategic Plan, Our Plan for Public Education in Western Australia, we are expanding the remit of the former Leadership Institute to strengthen system leadership, coordination and oversight of professional learning programs. This more integrated and contemporary approach to professional learning further enables the Department's commitment to support and develop our people.

The new Leadership, Learning and Development Directorate will deliver high-quality, system-endorsed professional learning and leadership development programs that build the capability of school leaders, teachers and support staff across Western Australia's public education system. Through the design, coordination and quality assurance of professional learning, the Directorate will support workforce development, build leadership capability and provide access to the learning and development opportunities schools need to support every student to achieve their potential.

The Directorate is also responsible for overseeing the development of the Department's new home of professional learning, the Leadership, Learning and Development Institute, which will include the new Disability and Inclusion Professional Learning Hub. This significant State Government initiative will support our workforce to address the increasingly diverse needs of students and help schools to deliver high-quality teaching, learning and wellbeing support.

About You

The Director, Leadership, Learning and Development will lead the future of professional learning and leadership development for staff in public schools. This leadership role is responsible for overseeing the development of the Department’s home of professional learning and capability building, including the new Disability and Inclusion Professional Learning Hub.

The Director leads the provision of high-quality, system-endorsed professional learning for public school staff and is responsible for developing system-level strategies that provide more tailored, coordinated and effective professional learning opportunities across the workforce. In consultation with stakeholders, the position oversees the development of professional learning principles, policies, advice, standards and quality assurance processes that ensure a consistent and evidence-informed approach across the system. 

The Director is also responsible for the delivery of contemporary leadership development programs that strengthen leadership capability, supporting school and system leaders. The position provides strategic advice to senior leaders on professional learning, leadership development and workforce capability, and plays a key role in shaping a professional learning system that is responsive to the evolving needs of schools, staff and the broader education system.

The Ideal Applicant

We are seeking an accomplished and strategic leader with substantial experience leading significant initiatives within a large and complex environment. You will bring demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in leading the development and implementation of successful professional learning programs, projects and strategies at a school, regional or system level. You will have a proven ability to translate strategic priorities into impactful initiatives that strengthen workforce capability and support organisational improvement.

You will possess a strong understanding of the evolving needs of schools, staff and the broader education system, and have a demonstrated ability to identify emerging issues, respond to changing circumstances and lead successful change. With highly developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills, you build productive partnerships, foster collaboration and provide trusted advice to support informed decision-making.

As an experienced senior leader, you will have a proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams, build organisational capability and create a culture of accountability, continuous improvement and learning. You will be adept at aligning people, programs and resources to achieve strategic objectives and deliver sustainable outcomes.
