Disability Support Worker – Nursing & Medical Students Encouraged to Apply

About the role

Brodie’s Magic is seeking proactive, patient and reliable Disability Support Workers to join an experienced team supporting one young person in Breakwater, Geelong.

Brodie is a vibrant young man who loves music, dancing, swimming, cycling, technology and being outdoors. He does not rely on spoken words as his primary means of communication, so you will learn how he communicates through AAC, body language, expressions and behaviour.

This is an active and engaging role. You will support Brodie to participate in his interests, communicate his preferences and exercise genuine choice and control—not simply supervise him.

The role may suit nursing, medical, allied health or disability-related students seeking meaningful paid employment alongside their studies. Applicants with relevant disability-support experience or transferable skills are equally encouraged to apply.

Key responsibilities

• Support Brodie with daily routines and personal care

• Provide safe mealtime support in accordance with his individual plans and training

• Support communication using AAC and assistive technology

• Facilitate community access, swimming and physical activities

• Support the development of independence and life skills

• Follow health, therapy and behaviour support plans

• Observe and report relevant changes

• Maintain clear and accurate shift documentation

• Work collaboratively with Brodie’s family, support team and allied health professionals

• Actively engage with Brodie in activities he enjoys

About you

You do not need years of disability-sector experience. We are looking for someone who:

• Is patient, attentive and genuinely interested in getting to know Brodie

• Takes initiative and notices what needs doing

• Asks questions when unsure

• Is comfortable providing personal care

• Carefully follows support plans and safety procedures

• Communicates clearly and completes accurate documentation

• Is reliable and has a strong work ethic

• Enjoys being active and engaging with others

• Is willing and able to support Brodie during swimming and water-based activities

• Respects Brodie’s dignity, communication, preferences and right to make choices

Relevant nursing, medical, allied health or disability-related study is desirable but not essential. Applicants with relevant disability-support experience, demonstrated capability or transferable skills are equally welcome.

Requirements

Applicants must have or be willing to obtain:

• Australian working rights

• A current Australian driver’s licence, as driving may form part of the role

• NDIS Worker Screening Check

• Working with Children Check

• First Aid and CPR

• All required Brodie-specific training and competency assessments

Applicants must be able to safely perform the inherent requirements of the position, including personal care, community access and water-based support. Reasonable workplace adjustments will be considered where applicable.

Casual shifts

Casual shifts may be offered across weekdays, weekends, school holidays and occasional sleepovers.

Common shift times include:

• Weekday mornings: 6:45am–9:00 am

• Weekday afternoons and evenings: approximately 3:00 pm–7:00 pm, occasionally later

• Weekends: 7:00 am–1:00 pm or 1:00 pm–8:00 pm, occasionally later

• Additional shifts during school holidays

• Occasional overnight sleepovers

This is casual employment. Hours are not guaranteed, and there is no firm advance commitment to ongoing work or a fixed pattern of hours.

Shifts are offered according to Brodie’s support needs, operational requirements and employee availability. Casual employees may accept or decline shifts offered to them.

Pay and conditions

The casual hourly rate starts from $35.55, including casual loading.

Higher rates, penalties, allowances and sleepover payments apply where required under the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010, based on the employee’s classification and when the work is performed.

All employees receive structured training specific to Brodie and only undertake duties appropriate to their role, training and assessed competency.

This is paid employment as a Disability Support Worker. It is not employment as a nurse or medical practitioner and is not a clinical placement.
