About the role

The 2IC Operations Manager will work alongside the Operations Manager to ensure mine site laboratories consistently deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality services to clients. They will provide leadership and guidance to Site Managers and Superintendents, support operational and commercial performance, oversee compliance with safety and quality systems, and play a key role in business improvement initiatives, tender submissions, and new site mobilisations. The role requires regular travel to client operations and mine sites, with a minimum of 12 site visits annually.

Key responsibilities

• Support the Operations Manager in leading and optimising multiple mine site laboratory operations across Australia

• Ensure laboratory services consistently meet customer expectations, contractual obligations, quality standards, and turnaround times

• Lead, mentor, and develop Site Managers and Superintendents to build engaged and high-performing teams

• Oversee workforce planning, recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and succession planning activities

• Manage and optimise site rosters to meet operational and client requirements

• Conduct regular site visits to support, audit, and improve operational performance

• Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, productivity, efficiency, and service delivery

• Champion a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with all client and Intertek safety requirements

• Maintain and oversee Safety Management Plans, Quality Management Systems, and Safe Work Procedures

• Build and maintain strong relationships with mining clients and key stakeholders

About you

• Tertiary qualification in Science or a related discipline

• Extensive experience within commercial laboratory and/or mine site laboratory operations

• Minimum five years' experience in senior operational leadership roles

• Strong understanding of mining, sample preparation, mineral analysis, and laboratory service delivery

• Demonstrated experience working within ISO 17025 and ISO 45001 accredited environments

• Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop geographically dispersed teams

• Strong commercial acumen, including experience with budgets, cost control, and P&L management

• Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and relationship-building skills

• Advanced Microsoft Office and business systems capability
