About the role
We're building aircraft that fly faster, further, and to space.
Hypersonix is an Australian aerospace engineering and advanced manufacturing company building hydrogen-powered scramjet aircraft. We work at the bleeding edge of hypersonic technology, delivering aircraft that fly faster, reach further, and open new pathways to space - and we're a small, highly capable team doing work that genuinely matters.
The Opportunity
As a Systems Engineer II, you'll lead the architecture, integration and verification of our hypersonic vehicle systems. Working across multiple engineering disciplines, you'll turn mission objectives into practical solutions, define system requirements and interfaces, and ensure designs are delivered from concept through to verification.
This is a rare opportunity to get hands-on with cutting-edge hypersonic technology in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. If you’re driven by innovation, thrive on tackling complex problems, and want the autonomy to make a real impact, we’d love to hear from you.
Responsibilities Include
What you’ll own
Develop and maintain requirements documents, traceability matrices (RTM) and verification cross-reference matrices (VCRM) with our Requirements Management Tool. Write clear, testable and unambiguous requirements that flow logically from parent requirements to design implementation. Develop verification strategies (test, analysis, inspection, demonstration) and define acceptance criteria for each requirement. Work closely with design and test teams to ensure design choices are implementable and testable. Champion engineering rigor, technical documentation standards and continuous improvement within the systems team. Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to define technical specifications, review designs and manage interface changes. Hands-on integration and testing of COTS avionics, sensors and electromechanical equipment into vehicle systems. Define system and subsystem architecture for vehicle platforms, including avionics, propulsion interfaces, fuel systems and test infrastructure. Decompose high-level mission requirements into subsystem and component specifications with clear performance budgets (mass, power, thermal, data rates). Develop interface control documents (ICDs) defining mechanical, electrical, data and fluid interfaces between subsystems and external/internal stakeholders. Make informed trade-off decisions on design alternatives using structured methods.Perform hazard analysis on flight and ground systems to identify failure modes, hazards and safety-critical functions.
Life at Hypersonix
We're a 60-person company moving fast in one of the most demanding fields in aerospace. The pace is fast, expectations are high and the environment is constantly evolving. The people who thrive here are energised by that — not unsettled by it.
To thrive here, you’ll need to embrace change, stay resilient, and bring a proactive, solutions-focused mindset. Priorities shift fast — you'll need to adapt just as fast and genuinely enjoy the pace rather than just tolerate it. You'll be part of a tight-knit team delivering bleeding-edge solutions under real deadline pressure, so strong problem-solving instincts and flexibility aren't nice-to-haves — they're how the work gets done.
What You’ll Bring
To hit the ground running in this role, you’ll need:
Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, or related engineering discipline. 5+ years in engineering roles, with at least 3 years in systems engineering or system architecture roles on complex hardware projects. Proven ability to define system architectures, decompose requirements, develop interface definitions and make defensible design trade-offs. Strong experience developing specifications, RTMs, VCRMs and verification strategies. Working knowledge across multiple engineering domains (mechanical, electrical, software, fluids), sufficient to evaluate integration feasibility and identify design risks. Experience with hardware integration, test execution, troubleshooting and documentation. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to obtain and maintain any applicable security clearance or background checks.
Bonus Points For
Aerospace or defence sector experience. Experience with avionics systems, electrical power distribution, or electro-mechanical actuation systems. Demonstrated experience with UAVs, robotics, or small-scale aerospace development projects. Familiarity with safety-critical design standards or regulatory compliance processes. CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, NX, CATIA) for packaging studies and integration reviews.
Applicants must be an Australian Citizen / Permanent Resident or have an appropriate Australian work visa. The Australian Defence Trade Controls Act (DTC) apply and as such, we may need to ask additional questions about citizenship as applicable. Applicants will also need to complete pre-employment workforce screening checks.

Benefits Include
Competitive salary. Equity participation Flexible working – we care about output, not hours Funded Professional development Confidential employee assistance program
With cutting-edge products, a bold vision, and global partnerships, our sustainable aerospace technology is set to transform the future of flight. Ready to join the mission? Apply today.
