All of our students participate in our compulsory music program from ELC through to Year 8, with the option for boys to continue with their music as an elective in their senior years. Our students are provided the opportunity to participate in ensembles/choirs and our instrumental program is very active. 

The role

We are currently seeking applications from experienced and driven professionals to join our thriving Music Department in January 2027 as our Director of Music, ELC-Year 12.

Reporting to the Director of Co-curriculum, the Director of Music is responsible for delivering best practice in choral, instrumental and ensemble music programs, whilst also leading and supporting a dedicated team of music teachers, instrumental music tutors and administrative staff.

In addition to this, an opportunity exists for the successful applicant to lead our strong choral program as our Head of Choral (if suitable).

In order to thrive at Brighton Grammar School, the successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

• Tertiary qualifications in Music Education together with current VIT registration (applications are invited from experienced teachers within primary and/or secondary).
• A high level of musical ability and performance.
• Demonstrated ability to enthuse, motivate and encourage students to participate in School ensembles.
• Competence as an Ensemble Conductor, with extensive knowledge of repertoire for young, developing and mature voices.
• Demonstrated leadership in the coordination of a music program within an educational context.
• Ability to develop constructive relationships with students that engender positive attitudes to learning.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure, in particular, to be adaptable and able to manage a number of competing demands.
• Effective classroom management skills to maximise learning opportunities for students.
• A strong understanding of the principles of the science of learning.
• Experience in delivering a knowledge-based curriculum that encourages and supports innovation amongst the students.
• Experience using evidence-informed teaching strategies based on the work of prominent educational researchers including Barak Rosenshine, Doug Lemov, John Hattie and Jim Knight.
• Use of explicit instruction techniques and frequent formative assessment to check for student understanding. 
• Knowledge of research findings relevant to student learning and education.
• A pursuit of continuous improvement and self-reflection as a teacher.
• A willingness to be actively involved in the cultural, pastoral and co-curricular activities of the School.
