Assistant Manager - Operations and Safety

The Company:

BML is the owner of the Brisbane Markets and is responsible for its ongoing management, maintenance and development in support of the horticulture industry. Brisbane Markets occupies 77 hectares of land with over 40 buildings and is Queensland’s most important distribution and economic hub for the trade of fresh produce and flowers, with approximately 700 million kilograms of produce handled annually by over 160 tenants operating within the site.

We are seeking an experienced Assistant Manager – Operations and Safety to join our Operations and Safety team at our Rocklea site.

About the role:

You will assist with the day-to-day operation of Brisbane Markets, with responsibility across:

• Operational leadership and supervision of Market Officer teams.

• Workplace health and safety, site compliance and risk management.

• Access control, security, traffic and vehicle management and parking compliance.

• Enforcement of the Brisbane Markets Regulations and Traffic Management Plan.

• Toolbox talks, safety workshops and safety communications.

• Incident response, investigations, reporting and emergency preparedness.

• Tenant engagement, customer service and complaint resolution.

• Coordination of fire evacuation drills and other site preparedness activities.

• Operational reporting, process improvement and implementation of policies and procedures.

• Supporting the Operations and Safety Manager, Safety Officer and Operations Supervisors as required.

This is a hands-on operational leadership position that requires someone who is comfortable working across the Market, engaging with tenants and other stakeholders, addressing compliance matters and responding effectively to operational issues.

About You:

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• 4–6 years’ experience managing or supervising diverse work groups in an operational environment, ideally within industrial, manufacturing or an equivalent setting.

• A Diploma or equivalent qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, or a commitment to obtain a safety qualification.

• Demonstrated ability to identify risks, implement practical controls and mitigate potential liabilities.

• Strong team management and reporting skills.

• Experience in fire safety, such as a Fire Safety Advisor or Warden role, is preferred.

The role is full-time, based on a 40-hour week, with the span of hours determined by operational requirements and reasonable additional hours where required. The position also includes a weekly night shift rotation for one week, three times each calendar year, to support training, meetings, mentoring and performance review activities with the shift team.
