About the role
Megavar is a specialist high voltage engineering firm delivering primary design, testing and commissioning, and substation maintenance for network businesses and generators across Tasmania, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. We're not a division of a large multidisciplinary consultancy — HV is all we do, and that focus means our engineers pick up real design responsibility earlier than they would in a larger organisation.
We're looking for a Substation Design Engineer to join our primary design team — ideally someone who has completed a structured graduate or rotational program with a network business (TasNetworks, Hydro Tasmania, TransGrid or similar) and is ready to build on that foundation in a consulting environment.
What You'll Be Doing
Supporting the design of HV substation primary systems, from concept through to detailed design, under the guidance of senior engineers.
Producing single line diagrams, HV substation layouts, cable sizing, earthing modelling and design, equipment and materials lists, clearance checks, and short circuit force calculations.
Contributing to design reports, power system calculations, and technical proposals.
Attending site visits and assessment surveys as projects require.
Working alongside protection, SCADA, civil and commissioning teams on multidisciplinary HV projects.
Building direct working relationships with clients, suppliers and other engineering disciplines across live projects.
Progressively taking on more independent design responsibility as your experience grows.
What We're Looking For
A bachelor's degree in electrical or power engineering.
3 – 5 years' post-graduate experience, including completion of a structured graduate or rotational program with an electricity network business or utility.
A working understanding of the transmission and distribution industry, standards and codes in Australia.
Developing substation primary design skills, and a genuine interest in strengthening them.
Exposure to AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
Willingness to learn specialist software such as CDEGS, PTW, ETAP and CYMCAP.
Strong attention to detail and the discipline to meet deadlines on client-facing work.
A curious, engineering-first mindset and genuine interest in working toward Chartered Engineer status.
Why Megavar
Direct exposure to senior HV engineers and real project responsibility, without the layers of a large multidisciplinary firm.
A genuinely varied caseload — primary design work across transmission, distribution, substation and renewables projects for clients including ElectraNet, TasNetworks, TransGrid, Downer, Acciona, Vestas and Goldwind.
Structured support toward Chartered Engineer / CPEng status.
Flexible working arrangements, based in our Adelaide office as part of a close-knit team spanning Hobart, Launceston, and Newcastle.
Relocation assistance available for the right candidate moving interstate.
Attractive salary package with genuine opportunities for progression as your experience grows.
