Primary objective
This role provides whole of government leadership for native title negotiations as well as working with Aboriginal people
and organisations to undertake and/or enable economic development on Aboriginal Land.
Context statement
The role reports through to the Senior Executive Director Economic Delivery and Strategy and regularly works with the
senior executives across the NT Government and provides advice to Government on native title matters.
Key duties and responsibilities
Key duties of the role are to provide expert advice to decision makers relating to native title matters as well as matters
relating to Aboriginal rights and interests under various legislation. The role manages a small team and works very closely
with other agencies and key stakeholders to resolve a range of matters. The role will be responsible for the administration
and governance functions of the office, including management of staff, budgets and complying with government policies.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated executive leadership and management experience, including highly developed strategy, planning,
organisational and people management skills.
2. Proven highly developed skills in strategic, conceptual and analytical thinking, operating in a sensitive political, social and
organisational environment, and in communication, negotiation and conflict resolution.
3. Proven exceptional interpersonal and communications skills with a demonstrated ability to engage constructively and
effectively across a broad range of technical, policy and strategic stakeholders, at a range of levels, from a range of
institutions.
4. Demonstrated effective written skills including experience in preparing Ministerials, Cabinet submissions, policies,
strategies, discussion papers and complex reports on sensitive and/or complex subject matters.
5. Tertiary qualifications relevant to the role combined with executive experience or equivalent combination of substantial
relevant experience and education/training.
Desirable
1. Demonstrated successful experience in undertaking complex negotiations with a range of sensitive matters.
2. A strong understanding of legislative and regulation requirements and obligations, particularly relating to the Aboriginal
Land Rights Act (NT) 1976 (Cth), Native Title Act and Sacred Sites Act.
