About the role
Our client is undertaking a multi-year program to exit its on-premises data centres and consolidate onto Microsoft Azure. A substantial estate of production, staging, development and test workloads still runs on-premises, and the agency needs an experienced hands-on engineer to assess that estate, size and design the Azure target, and then do the migration work.
This is not a pure architecture role and it is not a pure operations role. You will be the person who understands the current Microsoft server estate in detail, decides what moves and how, quantifies the impact of moving it, and then executes the migration wave by wave alongside the client’s infrastructure team.In short, you will assess the current servers, design the Azure target (right-sized SKUs, landing zone, cost model), migrate with Azure Migrate and Site Recovery, then decommission on-prem.
Eligibility Melbourne based. Australian citizens only.
Key responsibilities
Assessment · Build an accurate, evidence-based picture of the on-premises production and non-production server estate, covering workloads, dependencies, integrations, licensing, backup and DR posture, and end-of-life exposure.Map application-to-server and server-to-server dependencies, including integrations with cloud and third-party SaaS platforms.Assess current backup, replication, disaster recovery and patching arrangements, and identify gaps carried into the target state.Identify workloads that are unsuitable for lift-and-shift and recommend re-platform, re-architect, replace or retire dispositions.Document operating system, database and middleware end-of-life exposure, and the remediation required before migration.Design and planning• Right-size workloads into Azure VM SKUs, managed disk tiers and storage classes, balancing performance against cost.• Contribute to Azure landing zone design: subscriptions, management groups, networking, hybrid connectivity, identity and RBAC, tagging and policy.• Produce migration run books, wave plans, cutover schedules, rollback plans and test plans.• Build and maintain the Azure cost model, including reserved instance and licensing options such as Azure Hybrid Benefit.• Undertake impact assessments for each migration wave: service availability, performance, integration, security and operational impact, and present these to technical and non-technical stakeholders.Migration and delivery• Execute server migrations to Azure using Azure Migrate, Azure Site Recovery and comparable tooling, including replication, test failover, cutover and post-migration validation.• Rebuild or re-platform workloads into Azure where a lift-and-shift is not appropriate.• Configure and validate Azure Backup, Azure Site Recovery, monitoring and alerting for migrated workloads.• Automate repeatable build and migration activity using PowerShell, Azure CLI, ARM/Bicep or Terraform.• Support the decommissioning of on-premises infrastructure once workloads are confirmed stable in Azure.• Provide knowledge transfer and documentation to the client’s operations team so the migrated estate is supportable on handover.Essential skills and experience• 7+ years in senior systems engineering or infrastructure engineering roles, with deep, current Microsoft server expertise.• Demonstrated end-to-end experience migrating on-premises server workloads to Azure at scale: assessment through to cutover and decommission.• Strong Windows Server administration and engineering (2012 R2 through 2022/2025), including in-place and side-by-side OS upgrades.• Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, PKI and certificate services; hybrid identity with Entra ID (Azure AD) Connect.• VMware vSphere / ESXi in a production environment, including capacity, sizing and workload assessment.• Hands-on with Azure IaaS: virtual machines, managed disks, VNets, NSGs, load balancers, ExpressRoute or site-to-site VPN, Recovery Services vaults, Azure Monitor and Log Analytics.• Practical experience with Azure Migrate and Azure Site Recovery for discovery, dependency mapping and replication.• Strong PowerShell scripting and automation; infrastructure as code with Bicep, ARM or Terraform.• Enterprise backup and recovery, for example Commvault, Veeam or Azure Backup, including restore testing.• Ability to write clear technical documentation, run books, impact assessments and change records, and to take these through a formal change advisory process.• Confident engaging directly with application owners, business stakeholders and vendors.Desirable• Prior delivery into Australian Government or other highly regulated environments, with an understanding of ISM, Essential Eight or PSPF obligations.• Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, and Citrix NetScaler / ADC.• SQL Server and Oracle database migration to Azure or Azure SQL.• Experience supporting Java-based line-of-business applications on Windows or Linux servers.• Exposure to Microsoft 365, Power Platform and Dynamics 365 as adjacent platforms in the target state.• Networking and security appliance familiarity: Fortinet firewalls, Cisco switching, SD-WAN.• Identity platforms such as Okta or Microsoft Identity Manager.• Certifications: AZ-104, AZ-305, AZ-800/801, or MCSE.The environment you will work inTo give candidates an honest picture of the estate:• Several hundred virtualised server workloads across production, DMZ, staging, development and test, hosted in more than one data centre.• Predominantly Windows Server on VMware, with a mix of Linux, and a significant Citrix published-application footprint.• Established enterprise backup, monthly patching and DR practices that must be preserved through and after migration.• An existing and growing Azure footprint alongside Microsoft 365, Power Platform and Dynamics 365, plus a separate cloud IaaS tenancy and a number of third-party SaaS platforms.• A firm organisational commitment to full data centre exit, which means this role has a clear mandate and executive visibility. Why this role• A genuine end-to-end migration: you own the assessment, the design and the delivery, not a slice of someone else’s plan.• A long, funded program of work with extension potential, not a short-term backfill.• Melbourne based with remote delivery and a flexible working arrangement.
How to applyApplications close on a rolling basis and shortlisting is underway. To apply, send your CV together with a short note covering the largest server-to-Azure migration you have personally delivered: the number of workloads, the tooling you used, and your role in it.
