About the role
CommsDay is looking for a sharp, curious business journalist to join our newsroom and help build a new publication covering the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure sector. The role will combine reporting for CommsDay, Australia’s specialist telecommunications news service, with work on a new publication covering the companies and infrastructure behind the artificial intelligence boom.
This is an opportunity to get a front-row seat to the biggest technology revolution in three decades, covering the investment and policy decisions shaping AI in Australia and across the region.
The position is based in Sydney, with a combination of office attendance and working from home preferred. Canberra-based candidates may also be considered.
The beat will span telecommunications, data centres, energy, cloud, semiconductors, subsea cables, regulation and infrastructure investment.
We are looking for a journalist who can find stories rather than simply rewrite announcements.
You will develop sources, interview senior executives and policymakers, work through company filings and regulatory documents, and cover earnings and transactions.
Telecommunications experience is useful but not essential. We are also interested in journalists with backgrounds in technology, business, finance, infrastructure, energy, government or regulation.
What you'll doReport breaking and original news.Develop sources across business, government and technology.Interview CEOs, investors, regulators and ministers.Cover telcos, data centres, cloud, chips and infrastructure investment.Follow regulatory and policy developments.Help shape the new publication as it launches.Produce accurate, clean copy to daily and weekly deadlines.
What we're looking forYou should have professional journalism experience and strong news judgement. You will need to be comfortable picking up the phone, asking direct questions and developing contacts. You should be able to turn complex financial, corporate and government material into clear news stories. We value curiosity, accuracy, independence and the ability to recognise a strong angle.
Why join us?CommsDay has covered Australian telecommunications for more than 30 years and is read by senior executives, policymakers, regulators and investors.
This role alsooffers the chance to help build a new specialist publication from the ground up and become a recognised reporter covering one of the defining business and technology stories of this generation.
