Residential Care Worker - Non-Family Based Care

About the role

As part of the Non-Family Based Care (NFBC) Team you will directly provide care, support, supervision and guidance to children and young people under statutory orders placed in our 24/7 residential or Supported Independent Living Service (SILS). You will maintain living arrangements that are stable, safe, nurturing, trauma informed, affirming of culture, connected to community and provide age and stage appropriate risk assessed recreational / educative / skill building activities and development opportunities. 

You will help each person navigate their journey ‘into, through and out of’ placement, ensure their voice is central while encouraging self-regulation, positive group interactions and respectful negotiations. You will fulfil shift duties, complete administrative tasks, undertake practical household jobs and assist children and young people to achieve Support Plan goals.  

 

 

Duties & Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with the NFBC team to meet Child Safety related standards of care and licensing requirements, HSQF standards, Child Safe Organisation standards and the Universal Principle of cultural safety for children and young people in care. 

• Keep up to date with communications and maintain your knowledge of each child and young person you are working with along with key documents such as Placement Agreement, Case Plan, Support Plan along with schedules and commitments.   

• Provide reliable and consistent care, support, supervision and guidance to children and young people and maintain living arrangements that are stable, safe, nurturing, trauma informed, affirming of culture and connected to community.  

• Establish rapport, be responsive to needs, maintain consistent household routines (mealtimes, personal hygiene, rest, play time, homework, house meetings etc) and apply consistent positive behaviour, culturally safe and trauma informed approaches.  

• Include children and young people in decision making, encourage feedback and provide opportunities for input and communicate insights/ needs/ wants/ concerns/ feedback provided to the Care Coordinator. 

• Maintain professional boundaries, support engagement in school, age and stage risk assessed recreational pursuits, social activities and development opportunities and assist to connect with community and family / support options. 

• Understand children and young people’s health, medical, medication or ability related needs. Prepare, cook and share nutritious meals in line with healthy food choices, good food hygiene practices, meal plans and dietary requirements 

• Complete shift obligations such as (but not limited to) shopping, cleaning (house, equipment and vehicle), minor repairs and maintenance, gardening, issuing of approved medications etc. 

• Engage children and young people’s involvement in household cleaning and organising tasks, meal planning and food preparation and the development of life, practical and relational skills. Support with developmentally appropriate tasks through role modelling, mentoring and or doing the task with the child or young person. 

• Maintain administrative, data entry and documentation obligations using approved systems and devices while ensuring the privacy, confidentiality and security of client, staff and organisational information.   

• Contribute ideas and work with NFBC team to review and improve service design, implement innovations and maintain quality.  

 

To be successful you will need

• Minimum mandatory qualification is Certificate IV in Child, Youth & Family Intervention (or equivalent Child Safety approved course) or enrolled and able to complete by deadline.          

• Demonstrated record of successfully engaging with children and young people who have experienced trauma and serious adverse childhood experiences along with an understanding of the child safety system, statutory orders and the role of residential care.  

• Capacity to encourage emotional regulation and healing through positive behaviour strategies and relational, culturally safe and trauma informed approaches in the care, supervision and development of children and young people. 

• Sound knowledge of child and adolescent development and commitment to ensuring children and young people are respected, involved in decision making and supported to engage in learning and development opportunities. 

• Demonstrated skills in implementing Support Plans, liaising with service providers and stakeholders, the ability to follow through on commitments, close out actions and a willingness to provide practical assistance to children and young people. 

• Ability (and willingness) to complete shift duties, household tasks and grounds maintenance; shop, cook and share healthy meals and to maintain a welcoming, safe and inclusive homelike environment.  

• Experience in risk assessment, crisis management, incident reporting and skills in navigating solutions to challenges that may arise within 24/ 7 residential settings.   

• Demonstrated administrative, data entry, computer and report writing skills and ability to learn new systems and data bases.  

• Track record of strong Teamwork, collaborative practice and ability to follow through on agreed support and routines. 

• Commitment to diversity, inclusion, reconciliation and closing the gap objectives and experience working with First Nations people, organisations and communities. 

 

Compliance

• Evidence of mandatory qualifications or enrolment    

• Satisfactory outcome of a current (less than 3 months old) National Criminal History Check 

• Blue Card (QLD working with children card) 

• LCS2 (child safety screening check)  

• QLD drivers’ licence ‘Class C’ or interstate equivalent 

• Ability (and willingness) to be on 24/7 rotating roster, undertake shift work and sleepovers and if required go on the On Call roster   

• Required to transport clients and or to visit clients in their place of residence or within another out of office setting 

• Out of hours work may be required from time to time
