Therapeutic Counsellor

As a Therapeutic Counsellor, you will be responsible for delivering therapeutic counselling support to individuals affected by problem gambling and their families in order to assist in reducing the negative effects of problem gambling. All counselling programs are underpinned by psychodynamic, trauma informed, and holistic principles.

About the Role

The Therapeutic Counsellor will provide information on vocational, relationship, social and educational difficulties and issues, and work with people to help them to identify and define their emotional issues through therapies such as cognitive behavior therapy, interpersonal therapy and other talking therapies.

The Therapeutic Counsellor will operate within an evidence-based practice framework for the effectiveness of various therapeutic approaches. The Therapeutic Counsellor is bound by a code of ethics, good practice and confidentiality and is required to attend an ongoing program of continual professional development. Contribute to the development of coordinated approaches to service delivery across key stakeholder groups. In addition to face-to-face counselling, this position will raise community awareness of problem gambling issues to the multicultural communities utilising appropriate strategies.

This position is a part-time max term contract (working 14hrs/week) until the end of June 2028 with the possibility of extension, working hybrid from our Carlton Office. 

Key Responsibilities

• Provide culturally responsive counselling, crisis intervention, assessment, and referral services to clients and families.
• Conduct client intake, assessments, case management, and warm referrals to appropriate support services.
• Deliver individual, group, telephone, and therapeutic support sessions, including peer support and wellbeing programs.
• Maintain accurate client records, case notes, reporting, and data in line with funding and organisational requirements.
• Ensure compliance with privacy, confidentiality, ethical standards, and organisational policies and procedures.
• Develop and maintain referral networks and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
• Provide secondary consultation, debriefing, and support to professionals, staff, students, and Community of Practice groups.
• Contribute to community engagement, training, workshops, and other program initiatives as required.

Essential Criteria

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work, Counselling, Psychology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
• Demonstrated experience delivering therapeutic support to individuals, couples, and families using a range of counselling approaches.
• Strong organisational, time management, interpersonal, and culturally responsive communication skills.
• Experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, with trauma counselling experience highly regarded.
• Preferably at least 3 years' experience in a similar therapeutic counselling role.
