About the Role

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Female Support Worker to join our team at the Cooktown Domestic and Family Violence Shelter on a casual basis.

This is a shift work position, providing support across a rotating roster to women and children accessing our domestic and family violence service. You will play an important role in creating a safe, welcoming and supportive environment for clients during times of crisis and transition.

The successful applicant will be required to work a variety of shifts including day shifts, evening shifts, weekends and sleepovers. Shift availability will vary depending on service requirements.

To be considered for this role, you must:

• Live locally in Cooktown
• Have reliable access to mobile phone coverage during rostered shifts
• Be available to work across a range of shift types

Key Responsibilities

• Provide safe, respectful and person-centred support to women and children accessing the shelter.
• Support clients in line with their individual needs, goals and support plans.
• Develop positive relationships with clients through trauma-informed and strengths-based practice.
• Provide practical and emotional support to assist clients during their stay.
• Liaise and collaborate with clients, families and external services including DV Connect, Housing, ATODS and other community agencies.
• Assist with maintaining a safe, clean and welcoming shelter environment.
• Complete documentation and maintain confidentiality, privacy and professional boundaries.
• Participate in training, professional development and ongoing service improvement activities.

Skills & Experience

• Certificate III in Community Services, Community Welfare or similar qualification (or willingness to complete within the first two years of employment).
• Experience supporting people experiencing vulnerability, crisis or disadvantage is highly regarded.
• Demonstrated ability to build respectful and trusting relationships with clients.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to manage challenging situations calmly and effectively.
• Commitment to maintaining client dignity, confidentiality and privacy through inclusive and empowering practice.
• Current unrestricted driver’s licence.
• Current First Aid Certificate and CPR Certification.

Successful candidates will be required to complete probity checks including a National Criminal History Check and Working with Children Check.
