About the Role
Are you an experienced animal behaviour and training professional who is passionate about building capability, supporting best practice animal care and leading a high-performing team?
Animal Welfare League SA (AWL) is seeking a Behaviour and Training Manager to lead the development, implementation and delivery of training, behaviour and welfare programs that support safe, consistent and evidence-based animal care across the organisation.
In this hands-on leadership role, you will oversee the Behaviour team, design and deliver practical and theoretical training, guide behavioural assessments and modification plans, and provide expert advice to employees, volunteers, foster carers and key stakeholders. Key Responsibilities

Develop and maintain competency-based training frameworks for safe handling, behaviour assessment, behaviour modification, enrichment and welfare practices.
Provide coaching, mentoring and practical training to employees, volunteers and foster carers to support consistent standards and capability.
Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of AWL’s Behaviour Tiering Model, ensuring assessments are consistent, evidence based and aligned with current behavioural science.
Manage and develop the Behaviour team, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, learning and high performance.
Develop, implement and review behavioural policies, procedures, operational guidelines and training resources to support best practice and compliance.
What We’re Looking For
Essential
Relevant tertiary qualification in companion animal behaviour, training or animal welfare.
Demonstrated experience in companion animal behaviour assessment, behaviour modification, rehabilitation and welfare.
Experience leading, developing and supporting teams within an animal behaviour, welfare or training environment.
Experience designing, developing and delivering training programs and competency-based learning in animal behaviour, training or welfare.
Excellent communication, coaching and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to build capability across multidisciplinary teams.
Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to use data and evidence to drive continuous improvement.
Desirable
Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or equivalent adult education qualification.
Membership or accreditation with a recognised animal behaviour or training organisation.
Experience developing shelter behaviour programs or working within a shelter environment.
What’s on Offer
A meaningful leadership role helping improve behavioural outcomes and welfare for animals in AWL’s care.
The opportunity to shape organisation-wide training, coaching and capability-building programs.
A collaborative role working closely with animal care, veterinary services, foster care, volunteers and senior leaders.
The chance to contribute to the work of a trusted South Australian animal welfare organisation.
