About NAAFLS

The North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service (NAAFLS) is a not-for-profit organisation delivering holistic legal and support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing domestic, family and sexual violence. With offices across the Top End, our work is grounded in cultural respect, community collaboration, and self-determination.

About the Role

The Case Worker provides culturally safe, non-legal support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients accessing NAAFLS services. Working within a trauma-informed and strength-based framework, you will support clients to identify their goals, develop and implement case plans, and navigate legal and social support systems.

Working closely with solicitors, Aboriginal Client Support Officers, and external service providers, you will provide practical and emotional support to clients, coordinate referrals, assist with appointments, attend court and meetings, and help ensure clients receive holistic and culturally appropriate support.

This role involves regular travel to remote Top End communities and plays an important role in building trust, strengthening client outcomes, and supporting NAAFLS’ commitment to culturally safe service delivery.

About You

You are compassionate, culturally aware, and committed to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. You understand the impacts of trauma, family violence, and social disadvantage and can build trusting relationships with clients experiencing complex circumstances.

You are organised, reliable, and able to balance client support, administration, and community engagement responsibilities. You work well independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team and are comfortable travelling to remote communities.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide culturally safe, trauma-informed, and client-centred support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.
• Work collaboratively with clients to identify needs, goals, and appropriate support pathways.
• Develop, implement, and monitor client case plans in partnership with clients and internal teams.
• Provide practical assistance including support with appointments, referrals, court attendance, and engagement with community services.
• Build strong relationships with clients, families, communities, and external service providers.
• Support warm referrals and coordinated service delivery across legal, health, housing, and community services.
• Maintain accurate client records, case notes, and documentation in organisational systems.
• Assist with community legal education activities and community engagement initiatives.
• Work collaboratively with solicitors and the broader NAAFLS team to support positive outcomes for clients.
• Contribute to a culturally safe workplace that reflects NAAFLS’ values of respect, trust, and collaboration.

What We’re Looking For

Essential Criteria:

• Strong understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal communities in the Top End, including domestic, family, and sexual violence.
• Experience providing culturally safe support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
• Demonstrated ability to work within a trauma-informed, strengths-based framework.
• Experience supporting clients with complex needs and navigating social, community, or legal service systems.
• Ability to develop positive, respectful relationships with clients, families, communities, and stakeholders.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate sensitively with people experiencing distress or crisis.
• Experience maintaining accurate records, case notes, and client documentation.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team environment.
• Strong understanding of confidentiality, professional boundaries, and ethical practice.
• Flexible, non-judgemental, and client-focused approach to service delivery.
• Willingness and ability to travel regularly to remote communities.
• Willingness to participate in training, reflective practice, and professional development.
• Able to obtain a WWCC and satisfactory Criminal History Check.

Desirable Criteria:

• Qualifications in Community Services, Social Work, Aboriginal Studies, or a related field.
• Experience working with Aboriginal communities in remote or regional settings.
• Experience supporting clients impacted by domestic, family, and sexual violence or trauma.
• Understanding of the legal system and community support pathways
