Torres Strait Tours is seeking reliable, practical and motivated people to fill two permanent full-time positions based on Thursday Island:

• Trade Assistant

• Freight Delivery Driver and Yardperson

Both positions are Monday to Friday, 38 hours per week, and may be offered separately or together to a suitable couple or team looking to relocate to Thursday Island.

About Torres Strait Tours

Torres Strait Tours is a family-owned transport business that has operated in the Torres Strait since 1987. We provide ferry, bus, airport transfer, freight and passenger transport services between Thursday Island, Horn Island and surrounding communities.

Our operation includes passenger vessels, buses, commercial vehicles, freight areas, workshops, yards, staff accommodation and other operational facilities. These are varied, hands-on roles within a busy local transport business.

Trade Assistant

The Trade Assistant will support our workshop team with a broad range of practical duties, which may include:

• Assisting tradespeople with repairs and maintenance

• General vessel, vehicle and equipment maintenance

• Painting, sanding and preparation work

• Basic fabrication assistance

• Using hand and power tools

• Moving materials, equipment and supplies

• Cleaning and organising workshops, sheds and work areas

• Assisting with property and staff accommodation maintenance

• General labouring and maintenance duties

We are looking for someone who is practical, reliable and comfortable working with their hands. Previous experience in trade assistance, construction, marine, mechanical, fabrication, painting or general maintenance would be highly regarded.

Relevant licences, tickets or trade experience are advantageous, although applicants with strong practical ability and a good work ethic are also encouraged to apply.

Freight Delivery Driver and Yardperson

The Freight Delivery Driver and Yardperson will assist with the daily collection, handling, organisation and delivery of freight around Thursday Island.

Duties may include:

• Collecting and delivering freight

• Loading and unloading vehicles and vessels

• Receiving, checking and sorting incoming freight

• Preparing freight for delivery or transfer

• Recording deliveries and obtaining proof of delivery

• Contacting customers regarding collections and deliveries

• Assisting with manifests and freight paperwork

• Safely securing loads

• Keeping freight areas, vehicles and yards clean and organised

• Coordinating with ferry crews, drivers and office staff

• General yard, stores and operational duties including whipper snipper etc

This role involves regular lifting and moving of freight. Applicants must be physically capable of safely completing the duties.

A current driver licence is required. Experience in freight, deliveries, warehousing, transport, stores, removals, yard work or driving commercial vehicles would be highly regarded although not essential. Applicants should include details of any manual vehicle, light truck, forklift or other relevant experience.

Living on Thursday Island

Thursday Island is the main administrative and commercial centre of the Torres Strait. It has supermarkets, schools, medical services, sporting facilities, cafés, hotels and regular flights through nearby Horn Island.

Island life suits people who enjoy a smaller community, warm weather and a practical working environment. These are island-based positions and are not FIFO roles.

Accommodation

Subsidised furnished staff accommodation is available and is generally best suited to a single person. In some circumstances, accommodation may also be available for a couple.

Accommodation generally includes:

• A private bedroom

• Queen-sized bed

• Television and air conditioning

• Shared kitchen, bathroom and living areas

• Electricity, water and internet included

The two positions can be offered separately or together to the right couple or team.
