Media Associate - Flexible Location

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

As the Media Associate, you help secure strategic, high-quality media coverage that amplifies AI Australia's human rights advocacy campaigns, activist movement and brand. Working closely with the Strategic Communications Manager and the People Powered Campaigning Unit, you support the development and delivery of integrated media strategies that build public awareness, influence decision-makers and inspire people to take action.

You also contribute to the global work of Amnesty International by supporting media coverage of international human rights campaigns. Using your strong organisational and communications skills, you coordinate media activities, track and analyse coverage, maintain media systems and schedules, and help ensure campaigns are delivered with impact.

KEY DUTIES

• Production and distribution of high-quality media materials, pitching stories to journalists, coordinating media liaison, and monitoring of news media for human rights coverage.
• Cultivate and manage strong professional relationships with key journalists and media contacts across a diverse range of media outlets.
• Coordinate media engagements, respond to media requests and prepare briefing materials for spokespeople, including supporting on-call or after-hours duties as required.
• Collate media metrics for organisational reporting. Provide updates to staff and supporters on campaign-based media coverage.
• Assist in developing AIA’s official communications positions on a range of proactive and reactive human rights issues, including drafting key messages, press releases and public statements, and lines of response to breaking developments.
• Contribute to the development of media strategies for campaigns and priority issues.
• Build and maintain warm, professional working relationships with AIA staff, International Secretariat staff, sector partners, Amnesty activists and people with lived experience of the human rights issues AIA works on.
• Perform the role to a high standard within agreed timelines, and in line with AIA’s vision and values.
• Implement our diversity, inclusion and wellbeing commitments as required.
• Assist with logistical and administrative tasks, such as support for organisational, sector and other media events, and other tasks within your skills and competence as required.

QUALIFICATIONS + EXPERIENCE

• At least 1-2 years of experience in a media or communications position.
• Experience with writing media releases, interview briefs, spokesperson statements, blog posts.
• Demonstrated track record in/ or commitment to working with rights holders.
• Experience working with a diverse range of stakeholders: journalists, partner organisations, colleagues, members of other communities, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
• Background working in a fast-paced environment and managing competing deadlines and priorities with minimal direction.
• Familiarity with human rights issues and social change methods and tactics.

Desirable

• Experience working with or volunteering for a campaigning organisation.
• Relevant tertiary qualification in communications or a related field or demonstrated equivalent experience.
• Ability to support participatory processes with rights holders.

Skills

• Excellent written communication skills.
• Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills.
• Knowledge of media strategy and advocacy campaigning.
• Highly developed organisational and prioritisation skills.
