About the role
Whelan Lawyers is a growing boutique law firm with a strong commercial focus. We act for businesses, and sophisticated clients across commercial law, franchising, construction, corporate, leasing, disputes and related matters.
We are known for being sharp, practical and direct. We care about doing things properly. We think commercially, work to a high standard, and are building a firm with strong systems, good people and a clear sense of how we want to practice.
The RoleThis is a broad role for a capable lawyer who enjoys moving between commercial advisory work and contentious matters. You will run your own files with real autonomy, supported by close mentorship from a principal with extensive in-house and private practice experience. The mix will suit someone who wants variety, responsibility, and the chance to develop genuine expertise rather than being confined to a narrow lane.
Part time available for the right candidate.
Key responsibilities will include:
● Drafting, reviewing, and advising on a range of commercial agreements, including franchising, leasing, sale of business, and corporate advisory matters.
● Managing litigation and dispute resolution files from pre action correspondence through to hearing, including matters before the courts and VCAT.
● Building and maintaining strong client relationships, with a focus on practical, commercially aware advice.
● Contributing to the firm's precedents, systems, and knowledge as we continue to scale.
About You● 3 to 5 years post admission experience across commercial and litigation work, admitted to practice in Victoria with a current practicing certificate
● Sharp and quick thinking: you grasp the shape of a problem early and spot the detail everyone else missed.
● Strong drafting skills, sound commercial judgment, and the confidence to run your own files with support.
Why Join Us?● Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
● Hybrid and flexible working arrangements.
● Varied and high-quality work across commercial and litigation matters.
