About the role

In line with the State Government’s Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030 and its vision for a sustainable, low-waste, circular Western Australia, the City of Swan is currently transitioning to a three-bin kerbside collection service.

As the transition progresses, widespread and ongoing community education will be essential to support residents in understanding resource recovery, circular economy principles and how to correctly use the three-bin system. The Waste Education Officer position will play an important role in supporting the community through this transition and embedding sustainable waste practices across the City.

This position is being offered in a fixed-term capacity to October 2027.

The prime responsibility of this position is to design and deliver behaviour change educational programs and activities for the City of Swan. To educate the community on waste related sustainable environmental practices, and to influence improved changes in behaviour patterns with staff, residents, visitors, businesses, schools and the broader community particularly in waste minimisation, recycling, waste diversion and litter prevention.

Key accountabilities include, but are not limited to;

• Develop and implement a waste education plan, consistent with the City’s strategic objectives, and waste management strategy.
• Provide high level input into the implementation of the City’s waste management strategy.
• Work closely with key internal and external stakeholders to deliver waste education to the community on waste minimisation, recycling and litter control.
• To initiate, coordinate and project manage programs and projects across the organisation to bring about behaviour change relating to waste minimisation and awareness
• Investigate and respond to customer reports on waste and recycling issues and litter and illegal dumping issues, in a timely, effective and efficient manner.
• Maintain accurate records and reporting data for waste services activities, monitor relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and provide timely reports and recommendations to support operational requirements and the City’s waste management objectives.

About you

The successful candidate will have the following:

• Relevant formal qualification (Certificate III or IV in Waste Management or equivalent qualifications in environmental management, environmental science, or education of Business/Secretarial Studies or equivalent) or experience
• Demonstrated minimum of 3 years’ experience in waste management related projects
• Current WA ‘C’ class Driver’s Licence
• Current Working with Children Check
• A satisfactory National Police Certificate is required.

The salary for this position will be from $87,442.94 to $103,792.55 per annum, depending on the skills and experience of the successful applicant.
