Field Technician - Native Seed Collection

A practical, field‑based role for someone building their career in horticulture, agronomy or native plant science.

AustraHort is seeking a Field Technician to support our native seed collection program across pre-identified sites in regional QLD. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys applying plant knowledge in the field and wants to develop technical skills in species identification, seed maturity assessment and ecological restoration.

The role focuses on assessing seed maturity, collecting native species safely and accurately, and capturing field data that directly informs harvest planning and supports high-quality seed supply for restoration projects.

You’ll begin with structured training alongside our Managing Director, learning our collection methods, safety practices and digital systems. Once confident, you’ll operate independently — travelling throughout QLD during seasonal collection periods. A company vehicle, accommodation and all equipment are provided, and start/finish times are flexible to suit field conditions.

This role suits someone with an interest or background in horticulture, agronomy, ecology or native flora. You don’t need formal qualifications, but you do need an eye for detail, the ability to recognise (or learn to recognise) different species and seed structures and the physical capability for outdoor fieldwork.

About you

• Interest in horticulture, agronomy, ecology or native flora

• Ability to work independently in regional Queensland outdoor environments

• Physical fitness suitable for fieldwork

• Valid driver's licence

• Ability to identify or learn native plants, pasture species and seed structures

• Understanding of seed maturity, collection timing and basic plant biology

• Competence with digital tools for data entry, GPS use and record keeping

• Ability to walk long distances, bend, reach and carry equipment

• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in both collection and data recording

• Reliable, self-motivated and confident working independently
