About the role
This is a senior advisory role within the office of Peter George MP, Independent Member for Franklin. The position offers a unique opportunity to contribute directly to parliamentary debate, policy development and community advocacy on issues affecting Tasmania.
The successful applicant will work closely with the MP to develop policy positions, analyse legislation, manage parliamentary business and respond to emerging issues.
The Senior Policy Adviser will operate from both the Electorate and the Parliamentary Office during the sitting weeks.
This role will require flexibility in working hours as well as wide ranging duties, some as they arise from day-to-day.
The position demands discretion, sound judgement, and internal and external stakeholder management skills. Policy direction and strategic priorities will come from the MP.
Applicants should be comfortable working in a politically engaged environment and supporting the policy and parliamentary priorities of an Independent Member of Parliament.
The Senior Policy Adviser reports directly to Peter George MP and works collaboratively with other staff in the Parliamentary and Electorate Offices.
Key Responsibilities:
· Conduct policy and issues-based research and prepare written and oral briefings to internal and external stakeholders
· Prepare speeches for the MP on a range of subjects
· Produce briefings on legislation and upcoming Bills
· Monitor state policy developments and the legislative agenda
· Prepare parliamentary questions, notices, and responses
· Collaborate with other MP Advisers, where appropriate, on legislative affairs
· Build crossbench adviser relationships
· Develop media relationships, prepare media releases and briefings in collaboration with the MP
· Draft letters, submissions, and responses as required
· Build relationships with parliamentary services and external stakeholders across a range of sectors
· Assist in Question Time preparation, committee work, motions and amendments, estimates preparation, stakeholder consultations, strategic campaign development
Selection Criteria:
· Strong written communication skills.
· Experience in public policy, government, politics, advocacy, media or law.
· Demonstrated ability to analyse complex legislation and policy issues.
· Excellent stakeholder management skills.
· Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
· High level of discretion and professionalism.
· Demonstrated capacity to write high-quality briefing notes, speeches, submissions and correspondence under tight deadlines.
