Residential Support Worker

About the Role 

As a Residential Support Worker, you will work as part of a dedicated Youth Justice team to create a safe, supportive, and respectful home environment for young people residing in HOPE’s Bail Service. You will support young people to achieve their goals, meet their bail conditions, and build life skills through structured activities, mentoring, and positive role modelling. 

This role involves supporting young people with complex needs, including those impacted by youth justice involvement, mental health concerns, alcohol and other drug issues, and challenging behaviours. You will contribute to a strengths-based, trauma-informed approach that promotes wellbeing, accountability, and positive outcomes. 

This position operates across a rotating roster that includes weekdays, evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, and public holidays. 

Key responsibilities include: 

• Supporting young people to achieve goals outlined in their personalised strengths-based plans and bail conditions.  

• Creating a safe, nurturing, and home-like residential environment.  

• Building positive relationships with young people through mentoring, role modelling, and day-to-day support.  

• Facilitating recreational, educational, cultural, and life-skills activities.  

• Transporting young people to appointments, programs, family visits, and community activities.  

• Supporting young people experiencing mental health, alcohol and other drug, and justice-related challenges.  

• Responding appropriately to challenging behaviours and conflict situations in line with HOPE’s model of care.  

• Assisting with daily household duties, meal preparation, and maintaining a clean and healthy living environment.  

• Maintaining accurate case notes, incident reports, shift summaries, and client records within required timeframes.  

• Participating in team meetings, supervision, training, and continuous improvement activities.  

• Supporting community-based youth engagement activities when there are no young people residing in the Bail Service.

You’ll Need 

• Certificate III in Community Services, Youth Work, Alcohol and Other Drugs, or a related field, or demonstrated equivalent experience.  

• Experience delivering support programs or services to young people.  

• Ability and willingness to work with young people displaying challenging behaviours.  

• Strong communication, relationship-building, and problem-solving skills.  

• Understanding of Aboriginal culture and the ability to work in culturally respectful ways.  

• Experience using Microsoft Office programs and client management systems.  

• Ability to maintain professional boundaries and work effectively within a team environment.  

• Commitment to HOPE’s values and a strengths-based, trauma-informed approach to service delivery.  

Pre-employment requirements: 

• Current Driver’s Licence (C or A Class)  

• Working with Children Check  

• National Police Clearance (within 3 months)  

• Department of Justice Clearance  (can take up to 6 weeks)

• Current First Aid Certificate
