Senior Environmental Project Manager

Australian Naval Infrastructure Pty Ltd (ANI) is the owner, developer and manager of the Osborne Naval Shipyard, supporting the Commonwealth’s Naval Shipbuilding Plan. ANI is responsible for designing, constructing and managing shipyard infrastructure, including the new Nuclear-Powered Submarine Construction Yard (NPSCY) to support the AUKUS program, while also operating and maintaining common use facilities that enable Australia's sovereign naval shipbuilding capability.

ANI is seeking a highly experienced Senior Environmental Project Manager to lead the development and delivery of environmental programs and projects across the Osborne Naval Shipyard. This role is responsible for managing complex environmental initiatives, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements and delivering sustainable environmental outcomes that support major infrastructure and operational programs.

Reporting into the Infrastructure Development team, you will play a critical role in ensuring environmental requirements are embedded across project planning, design, construction and operational activities within a highly regulated defence environment.

Your key responsibilities will include:

• Lead the development and delivery of environmental programs and projects that support ANI's strategic and operational objectives

• Ensure compliance with State and Commonwealth environmental legislation, including the PDI Act, EP Act and, where applicable, the EPBC Act

• Plan, design and deliver environmental projects while successfully managing safety, quality, schedule and budget requirements

• Provide trusted environmental advice to project teams, stakeholders and senior leaders across the organisation

• Manage environmental consultancy contracts and oversee consultant and contractor performance to ensure legislative and organisational compliance

• Identify, manage and escalate environmental risks and project issues to achieve successful project outcomes

• Build and maintain strong relationships with internal teams, clients, regulators, contractors and community stakeholders

• Lead environmental negotiations and stakeholder engagement activities to achieve practical and sustainable outcomes

• Prepare and deliver high-quality reports, submissions, presentations and briefings for senior stakeholders and regulatory authorities

• Promote collaborative, solutions-focused approaches across project teams and external delivery partners     

About You

You are a senior environmental professional with extensive experience delivering environmental outcomes across major infrastructure, construction or industrial projects. You bring strong leadership capability, sound commercial judgement and the ability to navigate complex stakeholder environments while maintaining a sharp focus on compliance, risk management and project delivery.

You will also have:

• Australian citizenship and eligibility to obtain and maintain any required Defence security clearances

• Tertiary qualifications in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Planning or a related discipline

• Significant experience applying environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks, particularly the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016 and Environment Protection Act 1993

• Extensive experience providing environmental leadership and advice across large and/or multiple projects or programs of work

• Strong practical experience in major infrastructure projects across planning, design, construction and maintenance phases

• Experience managing environmental consultancy contracts and contractor relationships

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including presentations, authority submissions, contractual correspondence and executive briefings

• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex environmental issues clearly and effectively to diverse audiences

• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities and multiple stakeholders simultaneously

• Proven capability in stakeholder engagement, negotiation, dispute resolution and relationship management

• Experience engaging with government agencies, regulatory authorities, community groups and senior executives

• A collaborative and professional approach with the ability to influence outcomes and build trusted relation
