Boars Rock Winery, in the beautiful McLaren Vale wine region, is the home to Penny’s Hill Wines and Gemtree Organic Wines. Boars Rock is part of the Randall Wine Group and has significant vineyard holdings across most growing regions in South Australia, in addition to several wineries. The largest producer of luxury bulk wine, we are also famous for our premium fine wine brands - Seppeltsfield in the Barossa as well as Penny’s Hill Wines and Gemtree Wines in McLaren Vale.
We are pleased to be able to offer the opportunity for an experienced Cellar Manager to join our Boars Rock Winery in McLaren Vale. The winery is located on the south-western side of McLaren Vale township, 5 minutes to the beach, with the Adelaide CBD approximately 45 minutes travel by car.
The position is full time and permanent, working Monday-Friday outside of vintage, and across a 7 day a week roster during vintage.
About The Position
Reporting to the Winery Manager & working alongside the experienced Winemaking Team, a range of tasks for the position may include but not limited to:
Oversee cellar operations and cellar staff to ensure all quality parameters are met.
Weekly development of work program working closely with the winemaking and laboratory staff to ensure key production and quality demands are achieved.
Leader in site safety with daily supervision of cellar staff and ongoing training to ensure our staff are competent in the range of winemaking tasks undertaken at Boars Rock
Coordinate our vintage staff team from recruitment to inductions, onboarding and training in readiness for vintage operations
Play a key role in our food safety program (HACCP) and our sites Organic and Sustainability systems to meet requirements for the Gemtree Organic brand and our overall Sustainable Winegrowing Australia requirements.
Liaise with Maintenance staff with problem solving, reporting, plant and machinery repairs, and capital plans for short- & long-term projects
This position is responsible for winery consumable management with regular stocktakes, ordering and procurement and goods receival.
Manage the winery wastewater system in conjunction with the Maintenance Manager & Winery Manager to ensure our system is operating effectively.
This is an operational role so when and as needed the Cellar Manager will be required to undertake a range of cellar operations & to operate machinery to assist the team in meeting planned and incidental tasks.
The successful applicant will display a can-do attitude who engages with people to promote a safe, efficient and enjoyable workplace.
The position demands a high level of attention to detail and to be an effective communicator with staff, customers and service providers.
About You
Previous experience (5 + years) in a mid-sized winery working with winery brands, barrel programs, small batch winemaking and premium wine focus.
An astute, organised, detail focussed individual who loves being part of a small team (outside of vintage) & enjoys the hustle and bustle of vintage working with a significantly larger team of staff.
Proven experience with winery machinery operation and problem-solving skills relating to winery equipment.
You lead by example and have the people skills to engage effectively with all staff. You will demonstrate strong management skills and together with our winemaking team will ensure our staff are trained effectively for both safety and wine quality requirements
A genuine & strong people person, this role primary focus is managing people, particularly at vintage time and you will be an exceptional communicator, decision maker and show strong leadership skills.
The ability to meet the physical requirements of the job (lifting/moving hoses, pumps and other equipment)
Proficient in the use of MS Office programs
Current Drivers Licence
Current Forklift Licence
