Chemist/Senior Chemist - Environmental Testing Laboratory

Sydney Laboratory Services (SLS) is seeking an experienced Chemist to join our growing Environmental Chemistry Laboratory in Sydney.

This is an excellent opportunity for an analytical chemist with 3+ years of laboratory experience who has strong hands-on experience with GC and LC instrumentation and enjoys working in a fast-paced, quality-driven laboratory environment.

The successful candidate will perform routine environmental testing, support method improvements, maintain analytical instruments, and contribute to delivering high-quality results in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 and NATA requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor and Manager, your responsibilities will include:

• Perform routine sample preparation and analysis of environmental samples including soil, water, sediment and leachate.
• Operate and maintain analytical instrumentation including GC, GC-MS, LC and LC-MS/MS.
• Process analytical data, perform calculations and review QC results.
• Conduct routine instrument calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Monitor analytical quality and identify QC issues requiring investigation.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records and ensure compliance with laboratory procedures and the Quality Management System.
• Participate in method validation, verification and continuous improvement activities.
• Assist with implementing new analytical methods and improving laboratory efficiency.
• Work collaboratively with laboratory staff to achieve turnaround time and quality objectives.
• Comply with all laboratory safety and environmental procedures.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• A Bachelor's or higher degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
• 3+ years of analytical laboratory experience.
• Strong practical experience operating GC, GC-MS, LC and/or LC-MS/MS instrumentation.
• Previous experience in an environmental testing laboratory is highly preferred.
• Experience working within an ISO/IEC 17025 quality management system, preferably in a NATA-accredited laboratory.
• Current NATA Signatory approval is highly desirable. Applicants with approved NATA Signatory status for environmental organic analytical methods will be viewed favourably. Candidates with the capability to obtain NATA Signatory approval within a short period are also encouraged to apply.
• Excellent analytical troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Strong organisational, communication and time management skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Experience using Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) is advantageous.
• Experience with Shimadzu, Agilent and Thermo GC systems would be highly advantageous
• Experience with additional analytical techniques such as IC, ICP-OES or ICP-MS would be highly regarded.
