About the role
The CFO will enhance and oversee robust financial controls, manage risk, and provide high-level financial insights to the CEO and the Board of Directors to support mission-driven decision-making. This is a ‘hands-on’ and strategic role, requiring a balance between high-level financial planning and direct involvement in day-to-day financial operations and compliance.
You will make your mark providing strategic financial leadership through:
· developing long-term financial strategies that align with the organisation’s mission and strategic plan
· providing expert financial advice to CEO and Board regarding funding models, investment strategies, capital requirements and contract compliance
· overseeing annual budgeting processes ensuring departmental budgets are realistic and aligned with strategic goals.
· financial modelling and scenario planning to prepare the organisation for growth or economic volatility
· manage financial tracking and reporting of contract delivery obligations, report issues and corrective actions/adjustments
· developing the financial component of tender processes
. overseeing preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual management reports, providing clear analysis of variances and trends
. ensuring accurate, timely and compliant Annual Financial Reports
. managing cash flow forecasting, supervise core accounting functions (e.g. AP/AR, payroll), and ensure operational liquidity and project delivery
· managing external audit processes and ensure compliance with Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC), the ATO and Australian Accounting Standards
. driving ongoing improvements in financial systems, internal controls, processes, and software (e.g., Xero, or specialised ERPs)
· enhancing financial literacy across the organisation.
To succeed in the role, you will bring:
· extensive accounting experience, be CA or CPA certified and hold a recognised accounting qualification
· proven experience in a senior financial management role, preferably within the Australian NFP sector
· comprehensive knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and ACNC reporting obligations
· advanced skills in cloud-based accounting software and Excel.
· demonstrated ability to lead a core function, inspire team members to high performance as well as contribute strategically at an organisation-wide level
The following experience is highly desirable:
· managing complex, multi-stream funding models (Grants, NDIS, Government contracts, etc.)
· reporting to a Board of Directors or Audit/Risk sub-committees.
· change management experience in implementing new financial systems.
