About the Role

At Skylight, our Support Workers play a meaningful role in walking alongside participants on their mental health recovery journey. You’ll be part of a team that values connection, independence and supporting people to live a life that feels meaningful to them. We work within recovery-oriented, trauma-informed and person-centred frameworks, supporting participants with a range of mental health needs.

You will support participants to:

• Build confidence and independence
• Re-engage with their community and daily life
• Navigate challenges impacting their mental health
• Work towards goals that are meaningful to them

Supports are delivered in the community and, at times, in participants’ homes, depending on individual goals and needs. No two days are the same and support activities may include:

• Attending appointments or community-based activities
• Supporting individuals to establish structure and routine
• Facilitating social connection and community engagement
• Assisting with everyday tasks (e.g. shopping, planning, appointments)
• Encouraging skill-building, decision-making and independence

This role can be highly rewarding, but it also comes with challenges.

At times, you may:

• Support participants experiencing low motivation, anxiety or emotional distress
• Experience last-minute cancellations or difficulty engaging participants
• Need to sit with uncertainty and avoid “fixing” situations for people
• Work at a slower pace, where progress can take time and looks different for everyone

About You

You’ll be someone who:

• Builds genuine, respectful connections with a wide range of people
• Is comfortable supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges and distress
• Stays calm and patient and can maintain professional boundaries when situations become challenging
• Understands the importance of choice, dignity and autonomy
• Uses emotional intelligence, self-awareness and reflection in their work

You may have experience in:

• Mental health or community services
• Youth work, peer work or lived experience roles
• Customer-facing or people-focused roles

What matters most is your ability to connect, engage and support people to build their independence and work towards their NDIS goals.

Requirements

• Minimum Certificate III in individual support, disability, mental health, community services or relevant work or lived experience.  
• Understanding of mental health and psychosocial disability
• Availability across weekdays and weekends, with flexibility for short-notice supports
• Willingness to travel across metropolitan Adelaide
• Smartphone with internet access
• Current SA Driver’s Licence and reliable vehicle
• Current DHS Working With Children Check and DHS NDIS Worker Screening Check
