2Gen is a Gold Coast managed services provider. We look after business IT, cloud services, cyber security, networking, VoIP and automation for small and medium businesses across Southeast Queensland.

We also build software. Business applications, integrations, automation and AI systems that our clients rely on every day. We are a small team, we give honest advice, and we have gone all in on leveraging AI to build better software faster.

The role

We are looking for a developer who works with AI first. Not the occasional question to a chatbot, but AI as the environment you actually work in, and a real interest in seeing how far it can be pushed.

You will work on real customer projects alongside our senior developers and engineers, writing and shipping code that clients depend on. The work is mostly Python and Django, JavaScript and TypeScript with React and Node, API and platform integrations, and a growing amount of AI engineering: agents, local models, retrieval and automation that we design, build and run ourselves.

This role suits someone at graduate to junior level. If you are further along than that and the rest of this ad describes you, apply anyway.

The fundamentals matter here

AI is going to write a lot of the code. Your job is to know whether it is right. That means understanding how software actually works: data structures and which one to reach for, control flow, functions and state, structured and object-oriented design, relational databases and how to model data properly, HTTP and APIs, version control, testing, and enough about algorithms and complexity to spot something that will fall over at scale.

Most people who have this learned it at university, so a computer science, software engineering or IT degree with solid results is the most direct way to show us. It is not the only way. If you have worked through a proper structured course on your own - CS50, TAFE, a serious online program - and you can talk through the theory as comfortably as the code, we will take that just as seriously.

If you can generate a working app but cannot explain what the code is doing or why, this is not the role for you.

What you will do

• Build and ship features in Python and Django, and in JavaScript or TypeScript with React and Node, on real customer projects.

• Build integrations against APIs such as Microsoft Graph and Microsoft 365, Xero, ERP platforms and client line-of-business systems.

• Build practical AI systems: agents, tool integrations, retrieval and vector search, prompt and context design.

• Help develop, test and deploy local LLMs and AI-assisted workflows, both internally and for clients.

• Use Claude, Claude Code, Codex and similar tools as your day-to-day development environment, and review what they produce properly before it ships.

• Write tests, read other people's code, and debug down to the actual cause rather than the first plausible one.

• Deploy and support what you build on Azure, AWS, Google Cloud and Linux, with senior support behind you.

• Document what you build so the next person, human or agent, can pick it up.

What else we are looking for

• At least one language you can build something real in. Python, JavaScript or TypeScript are the most useful to us.

• Working knowledge of Git, SQL and the command line.

• Evidence that you finish things. Home labs, side projects, published repositories, coding experiments, AI projects. Half-built ideas are fine, as long as some of them get finished.

• Serious AI habits already, and a genuine appetite to go deeper into agents, local models, automation and tooling.

• The judgement to know when AI output is wrong. We want someone who uses AI constantly and still understands every line that ships.

• Australian working rights.

If you are coming from another technical industry rather than straight out of study, that is fine, provided the fundamentals above are there and you can show us where you picked them up.

Communication

You will be working closely with our senior developers and, before long, talking to clients directly. So this matters as much as the technical side.

We are looking for someone who can explain what they are building to a person who is not a developer, write things down clearly enough that the next person can pick them up, and ask for help rather than quietly burning three days on something. When we ask where something is up to, we want a straight answer. "I am halfway through and I have hit a problem" is far more use to us than an update that sounds fine and unravels a week later.
