About Mawarnkarra Health Service (MHS)
Mawarnkarra Health Services, a community controlled organization, is a primary health care service and community program provider, managed by the local Aboriginal community.
We strive to deliver holistic, comprehensive and culturally appropriate health and disability care to our communities in the Pilbara, treating approximately 3,500 people per year within our fully functional and accredited Clinic in Roebourne.
MHS aspires to be a strong, sustainable and recognized health service, building healthier communities with a positive change, and make a real difference in the health for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, and those who call Roebourne and the surrounding areas, home.
The Position
The role of TIS Worker (Female) is to undertake activities aimed at reducing smoking levels, supporting smokers to quit within our service area, and with the aim to improve the health of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, reducing the prevalence of tobacco use, through healthy promotion activities.
The primary goal of the TIS program is to:
reduce the use of smoking and e-cigarettes, and prevent uptake
promote 'smoke-free' communities, homes, cars, workplaces and other shared spaces
improve the life expectancy of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people
increase the number of healthy birthweights.
Activities will include:
Evidence collection within our service area to inform the program.
Brief interventions and positive care through community and support groups.
Education activities, inclusive of social and media campaigns.
Referring clients to formal cessation programs (within our clinic/externally).
Duties
Develop a comprehensive understanding of the profile of smoking within the community, the impacts of smoking, influencing factors on behaviour, and prevention and quitting issues within our service area.
Collect evidence to better understand motivations for smoking and quitting with our community members (learn why, where, when and what).
Use the evidence collected to plan and implement community programs that educate and support smoking reduction and quitting smoking.
Undertake brief interventions that lead to smoking reduction and cessation.
Deliver smoking cessation and support programs.
Work collaboratively with your team members to make a positive difference to the smoking profile of our community.
Work in partnership with other organizations to assist and promote smoking reduction and quit smoking.
Undertake induction and other training to develop the knowledge to perform this role at the highest level.
Requirements
Either a relevant qualification or demonstrable experience in health promotion within an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander context will be considered acceptable.
Minimum of 1-2 years experience in health promotion is required.
Consent to undergo a Western Australian Working With Children Check and a National Police Certificate. Employment is conditional pending the outcome of these checks.
Must hold a current Western Australian Drivers Licence.
Current CPR Certificate.
All employees are subject to regular random drug and alcohol screening.
Remuneration Benefits include:
Base Salary - $62,809.50
District Allowance (single) - $3,055.65
Housing Allowance - $18,200.00
Electricity Allowance - (paid over summer 10 pay periods) - $1,500.00
Annual airfare (after 12 months continuous service) - $1,000.00
Superannuation - 12% - $10,514.64
