About the role
Senior Instructional Designer – Technical Trade Training
Contract / Project-Based Australia | Remote
An established Australian technical services organisation is seeking an experienced instructional designer to redevelop a substantial body of specialist trade and inspection knowledge into a structured, engaging and professionally controlled training package.
The project involves existing technical source material, draft manuals, diagrams, field documentation and subject-matter expertise. The successful candidate will convert this material into a consistent training system suitable for adult trade learners, technical inspectors, supervisors and report writers.
Detailed course content and proprietary methodology will only be disclosed to shortlisted candidates following execution of a confidentiality agreement.
The Role
Working directly with technical subject-matter experts, you will:
Audit existing training material for repetition, gaps, sequencing and learner difficulty.
Establish a clear course architecture, learning pathway and module structure.
Rewrite complex technical information into accessible adult-learning language without reducing technical accuracy.
Develop learner guides, facilitator resources, practical activities, scenarios and field exercises.
Design knowledge questions, observation tasks, assessment tools, marking guidance and competency evidence requirements.
Create or direct high-quality technical diagrams, process illustrations and visual decision aids.
Integrate appropriate learner response space, workplace examples and reflective questions.
Maintain clear separation between learner content, instructor guidance and controlled assessment answers.
Apply consistent formatting, document control, versioning and source management.
Prepare polished A4 resources for print and accessible digital distribution.
Structure the package so it can undergo future RTO mapping, contextualisation and assessment validation.
Required Experience
Applicants should demonstrate:
Substantial instructional-design experience in vocational, technical, construction, engineering, utilities, compliance or workplace training.
Strong understanding of adult-learning principles and competency-based assessment.
Experience developing substantial learner manuals and instructor or assessor resources.
Ability to organise complex multidisciplinary source material into a logical learning sequence.
Advanced technical writing and editing skills using Australian English.
Experience developing practical assessments, scenarios, rubrics and observable performance criteria.
Strong visual communication skills, including technical diagrams, annotated illustrations or diagram briefs.
Competence in Microsoft Word and relevant publishing, illustration or e-learning software.
High standards of accuracy, confidentiality and intellectual-property control.
Ability to work constructively with experienced tradespeople and technical specialists.
Desirable Experience
The following will be highly regarded:
RTO resource development, assessment validation or training-product mapping experience.
A current or previous TAE qualification.
Experience in building services, construction, plumbing, engineering, insurance assessment or technical inspection.
Understanding of WHS obligations, regulated trade boundaries and standards-based technical content.
Experience producing accessible, print-ready training publications.
Experience converting field knowledge into repeatable practical training.
Technical subject-matter expertise is beneficial but is not a substitute for strong instructional-design capability. Technical content will be reviewed by nominated specialists before release.
Confidentiality and Intellectual Property
This project contains commercially sensitive systems, technical material and internal intellectual property.
The successful candidate will be required to:
Execute a confidentiality and intellectual-property agreement.
Use supplied material only for the authorised project.
Maintain controlled storage and version management.
Use only authorised or de-identified examples and imagery.
Refrain from placing project material in a personal portfolio without written approval.
Assign completed project materials to the commissioning organisation.
Engagement
This is expected to be a staged contract engagement, beginning with an audit and development plan before progressing into controlled production.
A paid sample task may be offered to shortlisted candidates to assess technical writing, instructional structure and visual communication.
How to Apply
Please provide:
A concise cover letter outlining your suitability.
A current CV.
Two or three relevant examples of technical or vocational training resources.
An example of an assessment tool, facilitator resource or technical diagram where available.
Your availability and preferred contract arrangement.
Your hourly, daily or project-based rate.
A short explanation of how you protect confidential client information and technical intellectual property.
Applications and supplied work samples will be treated confidentially.
