About the role:

Community police (Community Constables) provide a specialist support in the delivery of policing services to First Nations communities, the broader community and within specific policing operations throughout the State.

The Community Constable role provides a vast range of police service delivery and community 

engagement activities while being a trusted point of contact for community members. They provide front line police services, assist police officers in their duties while building a critical link between community, police officers and SA Police.

Some of the key tasks you will perform in this role include:

• Providing advice on contemporary and historical cultural issues and community activities to enhance police service delivery 

• Supporting police in operational responses, including attending incidents, conducting enquiries and undertaking preliminary investigations 

• Performing directed policing activities to assist in preventing and detecting crime, maintaining law and order and supporting community safety

• Proving advice and support to police and community assist in the safe resolution of incidents

• Assisting police in the planning and conduct of operations and investigations by providing cultural advice 

• Engaging with local groups to support in prevention initiatives

• Undertaking an active role in traffic policing and road safety campaigns

• Supporting culturally informed policing through engagement with victims, offenders, youth justice processes and training activities.

What your training will look like:

As a Community Constable, you'll undergo training modules at the SA Police Academy throughout the first 7-8 months of employment. Your training is designed to set you up for success by building your knowledge of policing practices, legislation, policies and procedures, while developing the practical skills and confidence needed to support communities across South Australia.

Training is delivered through a combination of Academy based learning and supervised, practical experience allowing you to put your learning into real-world environments.

Community Constables complete a five‑module training program combining Academy learning and on‑the‑job experience, building the skills and confidence needed to support frontline and community‑focused policing.

Eligibility:

To serve as a Community Constable, you must be:

• 17 years or older at the time of application

• Australian citizen or permanent resident

• able to meet medical, fitness and psychometric requirements

• hold a C class (car) Australian Driver's Licence 

• able to complete operational training and be willing to carry and use operational safety equipment, including a firearm

• demonstrate an ability to engage within First Nations communities.

Country and interstate applicants will be able to conduct the initial stages of the application process remotely and if successful, the training program incorporates accommodation costs in Adelaide for the modules of the Community Constable Development Program held at the SA Police Academy, Taperoo.
