MARINE TRAINER PATHWAY – BRISBANE / MANLY

Turn recreational boating and Personal Watercraft (PWC) experience into a professional outdoor marine training career.

Boat Licence Queensland (BLQ) is a government-accredited BoatSafe Training Organisation. We are seeking experienced boat and PWC operators for a limited Marine Trainer Pathway intake based primarily at Manly, Brisbane.

After successfully completing the pathway and receiving the required Maritime Safety Queensland approval, suitable candidates may be offered ongoing independent sub contractor work at approximately $55–$65 per hour gross.

MANDATORY LICENCE AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must:

• Hold a current Queensland Recreational Marine Driver Licence (RMDL)

• Hold a current Queensland Personal Watercraft Licence (PWCL) that has been held for MORE THAN 12 MONTHS

• Have substantial, current and hands-on PWC riding experience

• Have extensive practical small powerboat experience gained over a number of years

THE OPPORTUNITY

As a BoatSafe Trainer, you will deliver theory and practical training and assessment for Queensland recreational boat and PWC licences.

The work includes:

• Coaching students in safe boat and PWC operation

• Operating modern training vessels and PWCs. Marina based no trailer in out daily.

• Managing students calmly and professionally

• Completing BoatSafe records and compliance requirements

• Working outdoors as part of an experienced training team

The ongoing opportunity is primarily based at BLQ’s Manly operation. Full-time and part-time contractor availability may be considered.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

We welcome applications from three broad groups.

1. EXPERIENCED RECREATIONAL BOATERS with PWC EXPERIENCE

People with substantial real-world powerboat and PWC experience who want to move into a professional marine training career.

Relevant experience includes regular PWC riding, powerboats operation five metres or larger, launching and retrieval, marina and pontoon operations, close-quarters manoeuvring, navigation and operation in varying weather and water conditions.

Approximately three or more years and 150 or more boating days will be viewed favourably. Experienced PWC riding. The quality and breadth of experience are more important than a single number.

2. COMMERCIAL MARINE APPLICANTS with PWC EXPERIENCE.

Applicants holding Coxswain Grade 2 or Grade 1 Near Coastal, Master less than 24 metres Near Coastal or another relevant AMSA qualification are strongly encouraged to apply.

Commercial small-vessel qualifications are valuable but do not replace the mandatory practical PWC experience.

3. TEACHING AND TRAINING APPLICANTS with RECREATIONAL MARINE EXPERIENCE.

Applicants with Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, vocational education, workplace training, coaching or practical-instruction experience are also encouraged to apply.

Teaching qualifications are helpful but do not replace the mandatory boat and PWC experience.

TRAINING COSTS AND COMMITMENT

BLQ will cover approved pathway training components for selected candidates.

Pathway training days are unpaid. Participants are responsible for their own travel, accommodation, meals, personal expenses and income during training. Applicants should ensure they can make the required time and financial commitment before applying.

THE BLQ MARINE TRAINER PATHWAY

The pathway is adjusted to each candidate’s existing qualifications and experience. Applicants who already hold relevant marine or training qualifications may not require every component.

STAGE 1 – COMMERCIAL MARINE QUALIFICATIONS

Approximately 10 training days, where required

This stage assists selected candidates who need the minimum commercial marine qualification required before commencing as a BoatSafe trainee trainer. It may include Coxswain Grade 2 Near Coastal training, small-vessel operations, seamanship, safety and commercial operating procedures.

Candidates who already hold an accepted commercial marine qualification may not require this stage.

STAGE 2 – TAE AND BOATSAFE TRAINER PROGRAM

Approximately 20 training days

This stage may include:

• Required Training and Assessment units

• BoatSafe instructional systems and MSQ compliance

• Student coaching and assessment techniques

• Boat and PWC practical operations

• Supervised on-water training sessions

• BLQ operating systems, safety procedures and records

Approximately 15 of the 20 days are expected to be delivered from Manly, with approximately five days at the Gold Coast. Scheduling may vary according to qualifications, trainer availability and operational requirements. Some weekday and weekend availability will be required.

YOUR BLQ CAREER

Following successful pathway completion and the required approvals, suitable candidates WILL be offered ongoing BoatSafe trainer work as independent contractors.

• Approximate contractor rate: $55–$65 per hour gross

• Primarily based at Manly, Brisbane

• Full-time and part-time availability

• ABN required

• Weekday, Weekend and Public Holdys will be required.

Work volume depends on operational demand, qualifications and availability. Completion of the pathway does not guarantee BoatSafe approval or a minimum amount of contractor work.

OTHER ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must:

• Hold permanent Australian work rights

• Be physically fit and comfortable working outdoors on the water

• Hold or be able to obtain a Queensland Blue Card valid for paid work, or an accepted exemption card

• Complete the required criminal-history and suitable-person checks

• Be willing to work as an independent contractor under an ABN

• Attend pathway training primarily at Manly 15 days and approximately five days on the Gold Coast

• Be friendly, reliable, safety focused and a confident communicator
