About the Opportunity
The Legal Officer independently assesses sensitive and complex complaints and reports made to the Office for Public Integrity under the ICAC Act and makes considered recommendations for action, in accordance with relevant legislation. The Legal Officer plays a key role in discharging the OPI’s statutory functions under the PCD Act by monitoring and reviewing assessments by police, facilitating the referral of complaints and reports and assisting with consultation with SA Police as required by section 28 of the PCD Act. The Legal Officer exercises delegated authority to determine the action to be taken in respect of certain complaints and reports under the ICAC Act. The Legal Officer will communicate the outcome of assessments to a broad range of stakeholders and establish themselves as a point of contact with key stakeholders. The Legal Officer presents education sessions about the role of the OPI to public officers. As an experienced member of the Legal Team, the Legal Officer provides supervision, guidance and support to junior Legal Officers and Paralegals and strives to share their knowledge and experience with the team.
About the Business
The Independent Commission Against Corruption Act 2012 (ICAC Act) establishes the Office for Public Integrity (OPI) as an independent statutory authority.
The functions of the OPI under the ICAC Act are:
To receive and assess complaints about public administration from members of the public;
To receive and assess reports about corruption, misconduct and maladministration in public administration from inquiry agencies, public authorities and public officers; and
To refer complaints and reports to inquiry agencies, public authorities and public officers or to determine to take no action in accordance with this section.
The functions of the OPI under the Police Complaints and Discipline Act 2016 (PCD Act) are:
To oversee the assessment and investigation of complaints and reports relating to designated officers;
To oversee the operation and enforcement of the PCD Act; and
to refer certain complaints and reports to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).

Hold a Degree in Law and be admitted, or eligible to be admitted as a practitioner of the Supreme Court of South Australia.
