Wandiyali is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation, established in Newcastle in 1997. We are the largest accredited Aboriginal provider of PSP OOHC within Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Hunter Region, and Port Stephens. Wandiyali also has a number of Preservation Programs and support services that work closely with children, young people and families.

The Opportunity

The Domestic and Family Violence Young Person Pilot Program (DFV YPP) is an NSW Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) initiative in addressing the key drivers of domestic and family violence (DFV) early to break cycles of violence early and protect victim-survivors.

 

Yimaliko meaning Encourage in Awabakal language (DFV YPP) is an early intervention program for children and young people aged 10–17 years who are using or at risk of using violence against family members. It seeks to address the underlying drivers of DFV while strengthening protective factors that reduce the likelihood of escalation into more serious, entrenched, or long-term harm. The program aims to interrupt pathways toward future violence, justice involvement, and intergenerational DFV, while supporting young people’s safety, wellbeing, and positive development.

 

Yimaliko (DFV YPP) is grounded in the Social and Emotional Wellbeing Framework (SEWB) and draws on evidence informed practice to provide a Culturally responsive and holistic program. Yimaliko (DFV YPP) recognises children, young people and families’ strengths, capabilities and goals, with clinicians working alongside families to reduce the incidence of DFV. The foundation of the Yimaliko (DFV YPP) framework are the following core components:

• Youth Engagement
• Family Engagement
• DFV specific targeted support
• Case Management

 

The clinician is a key role in the Yimaliko (DFV YPP) team, and has several key responsibilities:

• Provides trauma informed, Culturally responsive support to children, young people and families with a range of complex needs promoting self-determination, family-led decision-making, including risk assessment, safety planning and goal setting
• Contributes to Yimaliko (DFV YPP) Quality Assurance processes
• Establishes effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including YAMS

Essential criteria;

• A commitment to the Vision, Mission, and Values of our organisation
• Aboriginal or/and Torres Strait Islander OR is Culturally confident and able to demonstrate their knowledge and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the community
• Tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Community Services, Psychology, or a related field or equivalent demonstrated experience working in Youth Justice and/or the Domestic and Family Violence sector
• Strong knowledge and skills understanding the complexities and correlates of Domestic and Family Violence and experience engaging with young people and families with a range of vulnerabilities and complex needs
• Demonstrated knowledge and skills in therapeutic interventions and Case Management, including implementing effective safety planning
• Strong skills in risk assessment, risk management and continuous improvement 
• Demonstrates qualities of strong communication, including conflict resolution and the capacity to build effective interagency relationships
• Sound organisational and time-management skills to balance crisis response with ongoing case management.
• Intermediate level of computer skills and experience using databases.
