Mental Health Clinician

About the role: 

The Mental Health Clinician supports access to appropriate care across the four core headspace streams, including:

• mental health and wellbeing;
• physical and sexual health;
• alcohol and other drug services; and
• work and study support.

The Mental Health Clinician works within professional qualifications, registration or membership requirements, competency, delegated authority and agreed scope of practice. The role contributes to safe service access, clinical risk identification and escalation, documentation, data collection, multidisciplinary care planning, service improvement and collaborative care for young people. The Mental Health Clinician works collaboratively with young people aged 12-25, families, carers, support people and the multidisciplinary team to ensure care is responsive to evolving and intersecting needs and aligned with the headspace model.

 About you? 

• Passionate about youth mental health
• Strong communication and stakeholder collaboration 
• Skilled in assessment, intervention and referrals
• Understanding and experience using clinical resources and community service networks
• Experience in psychological practice in Child, Adolescent and Family clinical services
• Well-developed knowledge of diverse cultures and community needs

Essential Criteria/ Qualifications & Registration:

• Tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy or Mental Health Nursing.
• Full professional registration or membership relevant to discipline, as follows:  

• • Psychologists must hold full and current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
  • Occupational Therapists must hold full and current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and be eligible for mental health credentialing or endorsement by the relevant professional body, where applicable.
  • Mental Health Nurses must be Division 1 Registered Nurses with current AHPRA registration and mental health qualifications, mental health credentialing, or eligibility for mental health credentialing by the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses.
  • Social Workers must hold an approved Social Work qualification and be eligible for, or hold, membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers and be eligible for mental health credentialing, including Accredited Mental Health Social Worker status, where applicable.

• The successful applicant will possess or willingness to obtain the following:  Current driver’s licence and access to a registered, comprehensively insured vehicle, Current First Aid and CPR certificate or willingness to obtain and maintain, Current Working with Children Check, National Police Check,  Australian work rights

Desirable Criteria:

• Experience working in a headspace service, including knowledge of the headspace model, No Wrong Door approach and hMIF requirements.
• Experience working in a youth mental health service.
• Experience delivering therapeutic group programs.
• Training in evidence-informed therapeutic interventions such as Single Session Thinking, brief intervention, CBT, ACT, trauma-informed practice or other relevant therapeutic approaches.
• Training in suicide prevention, ASIST, safeTALK, Youth Mental Health First Aid or similar.
• Experience in alcohol and other drug screening, brief intervention and harm minimisation.
• Experience working in a regional, rural or community-based service setting.
• Knowledge of the local Taree service system and referral pathways.
• Experience engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and/or culturally diverse communities.

Essential Experience:

• Demonstrated experience conducting mental health assessments, HEADSS assessments, risk assessments, referrals, care coordination and support planning for young people.
• Demonstrated experience providing counselling, brief intervention or therapeutic support using evidence-informed approaches.
• Demonstrated experience providing basic alcohol and other drug screening, assessment, brief intervention, harm minimisation support and referral within professional scope of practice.
• Demonstrated ability to work holistically with young people from diverse backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people, culturally and linguistically diverse young people, young people from refugee backgrounds, LGBTQIA+ young people, young people with disability and young people experiencing socio-economic disadvantage
