Location – Rockhampton
Your new role
Rockhampton Zoo is seeking an experienced and passionate Zoo Keeper to join our team on a full time basis.
We are particularly seeking an experienced Primate Keeper to work with our chimpanzees, while also contributing to the care and management of a range of exotic and native species.
This position also plays a key role in engaging and educating our visitors through interactive animal encounters, keeper talks, and guest programs, while delivering exceptional customer service. You’ll work closely with a dedicated team to maintain exhibits to a high standard and contribute to research and conservation initiatives.
Rockhampton Zoo is open to the public every day (except Christmas Day). Penalty rates apply where applicable, including weekends.
This position requires the completion of a satisfactory Criminal History Check - Police Certificate (Australia Wide Name Only Police Check).
What we are looking for
Demonstrated zoo keeping experience with native and exotic mammals, birds and/or reptiles, including animal husbandry, enrichment, training, food preparation and veterinary assistance.
Extensive experience working with primates, with Great Ape experience highly desirable.
Strong time management, customer service and communication skills, with the ability to deliver engaging keeper talks and visitor interactions.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative, problem-solving skills and resilience under pressure.
Commitment to workplace health and safety, ensuring the wellbeing of animals, team members and the public.

Application Criteria
Tertiary qualification in Zoo Keeping (or a related discipline) and/or substantial experience working with captive native and exotic animals, including animal husbandry, enrichment, training, food preparation, veterinary assistance, and a strong focus on animal welfare and safety.
Demonstrated experience caring for a diverse range of native and exotic mammals, birds and/or reptiles, with extensive experience working with primates (Great Ape experience highly desirable).
Strong customer service and communication skills, with the ability to engage visitors through keeper talks and animal interactions, while contributing positively as a proactive and collaborative team member.
