Applications Are Open For a 4 Week Full-time Temporary Position As a Summer Pharmacy Student At Northeast Health Wangaratta Pharmacy Department From 16 November 2026 Until 11 December 2026. Interested Applicants Will Be Working In a Regional Hospital Pharmacy Team Comprising Pharmacy Technicians, Clinical Ward Pharmacists And Specialty Pharmacists. The Immersive Experience Will Involve Hands-on Exposure And Opportunity To Apply Knowledge In a Variety Of Areas Including
Operational pharmacyClinical wards including general medical, general surgical, orthopaedics, intensive care, emergency, maternity, paediatrics, oncology and rehabilitation.Quality use of medicines projects and auditing
This position would suit students wishing to experience clinical hospital pharmacy and generalist practice in a regional setting. It is an excellent opportunity to grow and apply knowledge and skills in a supportive environment. The position is open to all pharmacy students who have completed their 3rd year in a Bachelor or Masters of pharmacy degree at an Australian institution. Temporary relocation to the region would be necessary for this position.

Upon joining us, you will be well supported by the Pharmacy Student Coordinator and your pharmacy colleagues, to gain exposure to a broad range of clinical pharmacy & medication management services provided by our team. You'll work closely with our team to develop skills in medication distribution and dispensing, using i.Pharmacy and Omnicell Automated Medication Cabinets. You’ll apply your medication knowledge in practice, via case-based learning in the ward environment, under the supervision of experienced and early career clinical pharmacists.
About Our Pharmacy Department
Our team comprises 22 pharmacists, 3 pharmacy interns, 8 pharmacy technicians and an administrative assistant.
Our clinical pharmacists are rostered to rotations of varying duration in:
Dispensary and Hospital In The Home,Day Oncology (with some on-site chemotherapy manufacturing performed in our aseptic/cytotoxic suite),Subacute/Rehabilitation/Geriatric Evaluation & Management,Medical Ward (2 pharmacists)Surgical Ward, Operating Theatre & Paediatric Ward (2 pharmacists)Inpatient Mental Health Unit,Intensive Care Unit,Emergency Department (including partnered pharmacist medication charting),
The clinical pharmacy team is also supported by a full-time Medication Safety & Antimicrobial Stewardship Pharmacist, and 1 day/week by our Education & Research Pharmacist (who leads our student placement program). Our Regional Lead Pharmacist for Cancer Services & Informatics maintains CHARM, our Oncology/Haematology EMR, enabling cancer services that are delivered across the Hume region at Northeast Health Wangaratta and Albury Wodonga’s Regional Cancer Centre.
Our 3 pharmacy interns take responsibility (under pharmacist supervision) for services delivered to Day Surgery, Maternity/Special Care Nursery & Dialysis Units.
Our first Pharmacist Resident candidate commenced their Training Program in June 2026, Australia’s first two ANZCAP Pharmacist Registrar Training Program candidates (Rural Health – Generalist) commenced in March 2026 and we have numerous pharmacists navigating the independent pathway towards ANZCAP recognition.
We currently provide a limited weekend service, with 2 pharmacists on a short shift each Saturday and Sunday, 2 pharmacists and a technician on public holidays, and on-call (shared by 12 pharmacists as rostered) outside business hours.
All our overnight inpatient areas have Omnicell Automated Medication Cabinets in place for medication inventory management, and we enjoy collaborative working relationships with our community and hospital-based pharmacy colleagues across the region as we routinely transition patients into & out of our care.

Wangaratta has a population of approximately 30,000 and our catchment serves a community of around 100 000 throughout the northeast Victoria.
