About the role
About us
HillSide Christian College is an evangelical Christian school in Forrestfield with around 460 students, from four-year-old Kindergarten through to Year 12. We're a ministry of HillSide Church, offering a caring, friendly and peaceful environment where young people can grow and thrive. We believe strong partnerships between the Church, staff, students and parents create the right conditions for learning.
Our staff share our Christian faith, values and goals, and are committed to helping every student reach their potential. You can read more about College life and our Christian ethos at www.hillside.wa.edu.au.
About the position
We're seeking a Secondary Education Assistant for Food Technology and Art to join our Christian learning community, either full time or at 0.8 FTE.
You'll work alongside our Secondary teachers in two of the most hands-on learning areas in the school. Practical lessons mean setting up workshops, preparing ingredients and materials, and keeping spaces safe and organised, all while helping students stay engaged with what they're making. You'll also provide individual and small-group support to students, including those with additional learning, behavioural or physical needs, under the direction of the classroom teacher.
Salary follows the College's Administration Pay Scale, which is above the Award rate. The level offered reflects your experience and the complexity of support required.
Responsibilities
Support teachers in delivering practical Food Technology and Art lessons, including food preparation and classroom/workshop setup
Provide individual and small-group support, including implementing individual education, behaviour or health care plans as directed
Help students engage with the curriculum across practical and core learning areas
Supervise students during lessons, transitions, breaks, excursions and incursions
Provide personal care, mobility, communication or sensory support to students with additional needs as required
Prepare and maintain classroom and workshop materials and learning spaces, and assist with related administrative tasks
Monitor and record student progress and behaviour, and support positive behaviour strategies
Model and uphold the College's Christian values, and contribute to staff meetings, professional learning and College events
Undertake other reasonable tasks as requested by the classroom teacher or Principals
Selection criteria
Essential:
Certificate III in Education Support, Disability Support or a related field (must hold, or be willing and able to obtain)
A personal faith in Jesus Christ as God and Saviour, active membership of an evangelical Christian church, and a Pastor's reference confirming your faith alignment
A current Working with Children Check, or eligibility to obtain one
Desirable:
Previous experience as an Education Assistant
Certificate IV in Education Support, Disability Support or a related field
A current Senior First Aid Certificate
Training in manual handling, positive behaviour support, or specific therapeutic approaches such as Auslan, AAC or autism-specific strategies
Experience supporting students with disability, additional needs, or English as an additional language
You'll also be able to demonstrate:
Strong interpersonal skills that build effective relationships with students, staff and families
The ability to work collaboratively and take direction, while working independently when required
The ability to support students with additional learning, behavioural or physical needs
Sound judgement, including knowing when to refer and consult with your line manager
The ability to maintain confidentiality in matters relating to student welfare
Faith requirements
Applicants should be able to demonstrate a personal faith in Jesus Christ as God and Saviour, and active membership in an evangelical Christian church. We're looking for proven performers who work well within a team and who genuinely desire to serve within a Christian educational setting. Education Assistants are expected to support teaching and learning from a Christian worldview.
