About us

The Corporate Strategy and Delivery group delivers essential corporate and enabling services and specialist support, allowing the department to operate efficiently and effectively.

Data, Performance and Governance is tasked with supporting the Chief Operating Officer in leading the department's agenda in delivery of justice and community safety services in Victoria by providing a strong evidence base for the development of effective policy and organisational management.

Evidence and Insights focuses on meeting the department's data needs by providing responsive and sustainable services focused on supporting departmental outcomes. It is also responsible for providing end-to-end evidence-based policy support across the department and the reporting of data and research to the Victorian public through the Crime Statistics Agency.

What you will do

As Senior Data Engineer, Operations, you will run key data refreshes. You will check data quality and improve how each refresh runs.

You will:

• run reliable and timely refreshes of key datasets from source to published output.
• check and reconcile data against source systems, rules and earlier periods.
• find and fix data issues, then clearly explain any impact or delays.
• automate manual and repetitive steps while improving tests, monitoring and alerts.
• maintain clear records, code libraries and process guides so others can repeat the work.

About you

No qualification is mandatory for this role. A relevant tertiary or vocational qualification is highly regarded.

You bring strong data engineering skills and careful attention to detail.

You should also have:

• strong SQL and Python skills, with experience building and fixing data transformation logic.
• experience with dbt or similar tools, and building data pipelines with cloud platforms.
• strong attention to detail and personal ownership of recurring data processes.
• a practical mindset that finds ways to automate repetitive work and reduce errors.
