About the Role
The School Marshal works 38 hours per week, term-time only. Commencement for this role is Term 4 2026.
Purpose of the role:
The primary purpose of the School Marshal's role is to support the school community in all matters relating to students, tutor supervision and discipline, fire safety, and coordination of special school events. The School Marshal is responsible to the Deputy Headmaster Teaching and Learning for aspects of the organisation and conduct of the Senior School Speech Day and to the Head of Middle School for some aspects of Middle School Presentation Afternoon.
Core Responsibilities and Areas of Focus
Student and Tutor Liaison:
• Administer the detention process, including liaising with students and parents promptly.
• Liaise with students on issues of lost property, including collecting and distributing items.
• Manage the issuing and maintenance of school lockers and student car parking.
• Manage all School Rolls, including (but not limited to):
• Plan, conduct and document investigations into student and tutor attendance, behaviour and / or dress, updating and / or introducing procedures to minimise policy breaches.
• Regularly attend Staff Meetings to provide data and insight regarding student and tutor attendance and behaviour (e.g. Student Wellbeing Team Meetings, Middle School Leadership Team Meetings, Head of Year Meetings, etc.).
• Regularly provide student and tutor supervision (e.g. detentions, Playground Duty, Tuckshop Duty, Bus Stop Duty, School co-curricular events, etc.).
Student supervision, discipline and leadership, including:
• Administer first aid (when required).
• Assist Heads of Year in student-related investigations.
• Assist with the organisation of Middle School inter-wing events.
• Assisted with weekly school assemblies.
• Attend Middle School Leadership Team Meetings (when required).
• Attend sporting and/or cultural events to assist with supervision (when required).
• Attend Student Wellbeing Team Meetings (when required).
• Collect and distribute lost property.
• Conduct investigations as requested Head of Senior School and/or Head of Middle School.
• Maintain CCTV register
• In partnership with teaching staff, ensure the social spaces are clean at the end of breaks and that student are on time to classes.
• Issue and maintain school lockers.
• Liaise with Cleaning Manager regarding any concerns in bathrooms and change rooms.
• Maintain a daily presence in social spaces.
• Manage and facilitate leave request process.
• Manage the student entry and exit protocols at the School Tuckshop before
• Monitor student visitation to external venues after School.
• Monitor and, where necessary, introduce procedures to maintain high standards of student dress, behaviour and discipline.
• Manage hair and uniform letters and follow up on student compliance.
• Perform bus stop duties (periodically) and be present at the various bus stops each afternoon.
• Record and monitor student absence and lateness.
• Supervise Old Boy tutors, ensuring they are following the school protocols.
WHS and Fire Safety:
Support the Senior Marshal in the following tasks as required:
• Liaise with relevant stakeholders to ensure the development of the Fire and Evacuation Plan, Signs and Diagrams.
• Review the Fire and Evacuation Plan and Evacuation Sign and Diagram annually.
• Monitor the School's prescribed fire safety installation maintenance schedule and maintenance records and advise of discrepancies.
• Liaise with QFES personnel during building inspections and, if possible, be available at the time of inspection with access to all relevant maintenance records and documentation.
• Arranging or providing general evacuation instruction, first response evacuation instruction, and evacuation coordination instruction as required.
• Assist in the coordination of evacuation practices.
• Provide immediate first aid and support to students and staff.
Organisation of Speech Day:
• Organise engraving of all trophies.
• Collect and collate book awards and prizes.
Assist with the organisation of the Middle School Presentation Afternoon:
• Arrange engraving of trophies
• Contribute to the successful running of the event.
Coaching/Supervision of students at key events:
• Supervise students at non–sporting events as required by the Head of Middle School or the Head of Senior School and Middle School.
• Supervise students at Saturday sports and key GPS events (when required), ensuring uniform and behaviour meet expected standards.
School Transport:
• Liaise with external service providers to ensure accurate information is communicated in a timely manner.
• Manage all transport bookings for the whole of School (students and staff), including the development and maintenance of clear and efficient processes and ongoing monitoring of processes.
• Liaise with Senior Marshal on budgeting process for transport requirements
• Manage bookings and upkeep of BGS vehicles
Other Duties:
• Other duties commensurate with your role and qualifications/experience, the School may reasonably require from time to time.
Skills and Experience
• A willingness and ability to routinely monitor student behaviour in school grounds and investigate complaints of poor student behaviour on their way to or from School.
• Competency at this level requires proven expertise and understanding of school facilities operations, standards and application of suitable processes, as well as:
• Demonstrated experience to analyse requirements, identify solutions, plan and coordinate cost effective renewal projects, following documented methods and instructions.
• Sound knowledge and compliance with regulations, codes and specifications relevant to the role.
• The ability to actively supervise school grounds and areas around school campus, before, during and after School.
• The ability to perform activities consistent with workplace, health and safety guidelines and procedures.
• The ability to undertake a range of functions which may require the practical application of high-level skills relevant to the role.
• The ability to undertake required procedures independently without intensive supervision.
• A desire to professionally contribute to the Student Wellbeing Team and Middle School Leadership Team.
