About the role
GPS Electrical Services is a national leader in Electrical Installation, Maintenance, Engineering, and System Integration services. We support clients across manufacturing, utilities, chemical, food & beverage, pharmaceutical, and other process-driven industries, delivering technical excellence with a strong focus on safety and innovation. We deliver complete solutions that support our clients throughout the full lifecycle of their assets and projects.
For more than 30 years, our success has been built on strong values and high professional standards. We foster a culture of accountability, respect, integrity, and teamwork, where people support one another and take pride in delivering quality work.
As part of the Sentra Group, we operate as one team, collaborating seamlessly across disciplines to deliver complete solutions and long-term value.
About the Opportunity:
We are seeking a highly skilled Hazardous Area Engineer to join the team supporting clients across manufacturing, renewables and utilities.
You will act as the technical reference point for the Engineering team on hazardous area matters, review classification and design deliverables prepared by others, and build hazardous area capability across the wider team.
This position offers the opportunity to work on diverse projects, collaborating with teams across the Sentra Group to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Act as the responsible Engineer for hazardous area classification across manufacturing, oil, gas, and petrochemical plants.
Identify sources of release and assign grade of release; assess ventilation availability and effectiveness; and determine zone type and extent in accordance with AS/NZS 60079.10.1 (gas and vapour) and AS/NZS 60079.10.2 (combustible dust)
Interpret P&IDs, dangerous goods inventories, safety data sheets, process conditions and material property data, and identify where data gaps require testing, client input or conservative assumption before classification can be completed
Conduct site inspections and walkdowns to validate that documented process information reflects the installation as built and as operated
Prepare and issue hazardous area classification drawings, zone schedules and supporting calculation records, documenting all assumptions, data sources and areas of engineering judgement so that the basis of classification is auditable
Provide technical review and approval of classification deliverables prepared by other engineers and drafters
Compile, review and maintain hazardous area verification dossiers, including establishing dossiers for legacy installations where none exists
Design and verify electrical switchboards and control panels in compliance with industry standards
What We’re Looking for:
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
Minimum 3 years’ hazardous area experience, including demonstrated experience originating hazardous area classifications as the responsible engineer
Strong understanding of Australian Standards
Experience with AutoCAD Electrical, PowerCAD, ETAP, SKM, or similar software is highly regarded
Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills
The ability to work independently on-site and collaboratively within a team
A proactive mindset with strong attention to detail
What’s On Offer?
Join a national business experiencing strong growth.
Exposure to diverse and technically challenging projects.
Competitive remuneration based on your experience.
High-performing and collaborative team environment.
