About the role
About us
The Macleay Hotel is a 126-room hotel at 28 Macleay Street, Potts Point, a short walk from Sydney’s CBD, Kings Cross and the harbour. Accommodation is our core business — we host domestic and international leisure guests, corporate travellers and long-stay guests year round.
About the role
We are seeking an experienced Hotel Manager to take full operational responsibility for the property. This is a hands-on senior management role with accountability across every department — reception and reservations, housekeeping, maintenance and grounds, security, guest services, and the property’s accounting and purchasing functions. You will report directly to the owners and lead the full on-site team.
Key responsibilities
• Plan, organise, direct and control the day-to-day operations of the hotel across all departments
• Direct and oversee reservations, reception, room service and housekeeping activities
• Recruit, roster, train, supervise and performance-manage staff across all operational departments
• Set and implement operating policies, procedures and service standards
• Prepare and manage budgets, monitor revenue, control operating costs and oversee accounting and purchasing activities
• Manage room rates, inventory, distribution channels and occupancy performance
• Supervise security arrangements and property, garden and building maintenance
• Assess and review customer satisfaction, and resolve escalated guest complaints
• Ensure compliance with work health and safety, food safety, fire safety, liquor and other applicable laws and regulations
• Liaise with suppliers, contractors and agents, and negotiate service contracts
• Provide guests with local tourism information and arrange tours and transport as required
Skills and experience required
• A qualification at Australian Diploma level or higher (or overseas equivalent) in hotel management, hospitality management, tourism with hospitality management subjects, or business administration. Substantial relevant senior hotel management experience may be considered in place of a formal qualification.
• A minimum of one year’s recent full-time experience managing a hotel, motel or comparable accommodation property, with responsibility across all operational departments rather than front office alone
• Demonstrated experience in staff leadership, rostering and training
• Demonstrated budgeting, cost control and financial reporting ability
• Working knowledge of property management systems, online distribution and channel management
• Strong written and spoken English and excellent guest-facing communication
• Sound knowledge of Australian WHS and hospitality regulatory obligations
• A second language is highly regarded, given our international guest mix
Availability — please read before applying
This is a seven-day operation and the roster reflects that. The successful applicant must be available to work:
• Both Saturday and Sunday, as part of the standard roster
• Regular afternoon and evening shifts, 2:00pm to 10:00pm
• Public holidays, and on-call as operationally required
Applicants who are not available for weekend and evening work will not be able to perform this role.
What we offer
• $79,500 – $85,000 per annum plus superannuation, based on a 38-hour week
• Full-time, ongoing position
• A senior role with genuine autonomy over the whole property
• Central Potts Point location, walking distance to public transport
