About the role

National Parks and Wildlife Service has a unique opportunity for a Field Officer 1-4 to work as part of the team and contribute towards the conservation of the natural environment, flora, fauna and Aboriginal heritage.

 

This is an Aboriginal Identified role where Aboriginal identity, cultural knowledge or connections are a genuine aspect of the role. Positions are specifically noted under the provisions of the NSW Anti-discrimination Act (1977). 

 

 

Our NPWS team is currently seeking to appoint a Field Officer Grade 1-4 to help protect and maintain some of NSW's most iconic national parks and reserves. This is a hands-on, physically active role suited to people who enjoy working outdoors, take pride in practical work, and are passionate about conserving the natural and cultural heritage of NSW.

 

As a Field Officer, you'll play a key role in delivering a wide range of operational programs across our parks and reserves. You'll be involved in asset construction and maintenance, fire management activities, feral animal and weed control, visitor facility upkeep, threatened species and rehabilitation programs, and supporting visitor services. Working as part of a supportive and collaborative team, you'll have opportunities to develop specialist skills, gain industry-recognised qualifications, and contribute to meaningful projects that protect our environment for future generations. The role offers a unique mix of independent field work and teamwork, often in some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes across NSW.

 

This Field Officer role is based in the Eurobodalla Area. The Tanja Depot manages the southern reserves of the area, including Mimosa Rocks National Park, Murrah Flora Reserve, Bermaguee Nature Reserve, and the Aboriginal-owned and jointly managed Biamanga National Park.

 

 

About You

You are a practical, safety-conscious individual who enjoys working outdoors and contributing to positive environmental outcomes. You bring a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

 

Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal culture, connection to Country and the ability to work collaboratively with Aboriginal communities in the management and protection of natural and cultural heritage.

 

 

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Experience undertaking outdoor, construction, maintenance, land management, environmental, horticultural, rural, landscaping or similar field-based work.
• Ability to safely operate and maintain a range of tools, plant and equipment, or a willingness to learn.
• Strong commitment to workplace health, safety and environmental practices.
• Willingness to fly in light aircraft.
• Experience working as part of a team and contributing to shared goals and outcomes.
• Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage positively with colleagues, contractors, stakeholders and park visitors.
• Ability to work in remote and outdoor environments and adapt to changing weather and operational conditions.
• Problem-solving skills and the ability to use initiative when undertaking field-based activities.
• Basic digital literacy and confidence using computers, mobile devices and technology in the workplace.
• A willingness to undertake training and obtain required licences, certifications and operational competencies.

 

 

Essential Requirements

• Aboriginality in accordance with Section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
• Current Australian Class C Drivers licence or equivalent.
• Ability to obtain Medium Rigid (MR) Licence and operate MR vehicles, if required.
• Obtain a Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) Recovery Certification (Statement of Attainment) within 6 months of commencement as arranged by NPWS with compliant providers.
• First Aid certificate obtained within 6 months of commencement.
• Obtain General Construction Induction card (White Card) within 6 months from commencement. 
• Certification (Statement of Attainment) to operate a chainsaw to level 1 crosscut standard obtained within 12 months from commencement.

Firefighting requirements (not applicable to casual roles)

• Applicants must meet the requirements of a firefighting medical during the recruitment process and 1-3 yearly thereafter, which is inclusive of a clearance to undertake frontline firefighting roles.
• Following commencement in a firefighting role, Field Officers must pass the task-based physical fitness assessment to a moderate level within their first 12 months of employment and annually thereafter.
• Ability to carry out frontline firefighting duties and support roles including ability to obtain and maintain NPWS certification as a crew member or higher, within the first 12 months of their employment.
